#7 St. Cloud State opens year with 6-2 win over Regina

St. Cloud, Minn. - The #7 ranked St. Cloud State University men's hockey team opened its 2016-17 season with a 6-2 exhibition game victory over the University of Regina on Sunday, Oct. 2 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Huskies dominated the game from the opening minutes, while outshooting the Cougars 30-17 in the contest. Patrick Newell lit the lamp at :43 of the first period with assists from Robby Jackson and Blake Winiecki to make the early score 1-0.
The Huskies pushed its lead to 2-0 at 4:25 of the first period with a marker by Ryan Papa, which was assisted by Jon Lizotte. Regina broke the shutout at 8:07 of the first period with a goal by Isaac Schacher, before Mikey Eyssimont added SCSU's third goal of the evening at 13:15 of the first with a power play score that was assisted by Newell and Jimmy Schuldt.
In the second period, Regina closed the gap to 3-2 with a power play goal by J.J. Coleshaw at 1:37. St. Cloud State returned to the scoring column at 12:33 of the second period with a goal by Judd Peterson. He was assisted on the play by Jacob Benson and Robby Jackson.
In the final period, Jackson notched his third point of the evening with a goal at 4:50 of the third period. Newell and Will Borgen had assists on the play, which pushed Newell's game total to 1g/2a. The evening's scoring was completed at 7:47 of the third period as Daniel Tedesco scored SCSU's sixth goal of the game. Benson and Lizotte posted assists on the goal.
SCSU used all three of its goaltenders in the game as starter Jeff Smith gained the victory with three saves and one goal allowed. David Zevnik played the second period with eight saves and one goal allowed, while Zach Driscoll played the third period with four saves and no goals allowed.
On the power play, SCSU was 1-of-3 and Regina was 1-of-4 in the game.
The Huskies will be idle next weekend before returning to the ice for the regular season opener at Minnesota State University on Oct. 14-15 in Mankato, Minn. Fans can listen to the game on REV 96.7 FM (www.rev967.com)
