St. Cloud State notched an extra point in the standings with a 2-1 shootout win
MANKATO—After going back and forth in regulation, the St. Cloud State women's hockey team (2-4-1, 1-3-1-1 WCHA) settled for a 2-2 tie in its series opener at Minnesota State on Friday.
After 60 minutes plus overtime did not solve anything, the Huskies prevailed in an eight-round shootout, 2-1, to earn an extra point in the conference standings.
The two WCHA foes traded goals in the second and third periods. St. Cloud State took a pair of one-goal leads, 1-0 in the second and 2-1 late in the third, but the Mavericks battled back each time. MSU found the final equalizer with just 1:52 remaining in regulation.
SCSU freshman forward Kayla Friesen's first career goal opened the scoring just over halfway through a dominant middle frame for the Huskies. St. Cloud State more than doubled MSU in shots on goal, 18-7, and shot attempts, 25-12, but were unable to break through again after Friesen's tally.
"You have to find a way to get one more goal when you are playing like that if you want to be a team that is playing for something at the end of the year," head Rud said.
"We left things to chance by going into the period tied at one."
It looked like senior forward Payge Peña had the game-winner with just over eight minutes to play in the third, but MSU sophomore forward Emily Antony scored with under two minutes left to knot the score at two.
After a scoreless 5-on-5 overtime period, senior forward Kelsey Saelens scored in the eighth round of the shootout to win another point for the Huskies.
Freshman goaltender Janine Alder got the start and made 26 saves in performance Rud called "outstanding".
St. Cloud State and Minnesota State close out their series on Saturday, October 22. Game time is 3:07 p.m.
