#14 St. Cloud State gains weekend sweep of #7 Minnesota

The #14 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team continued its success against the University of Minnesota with a 3-2 victory over the Gophers at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. on Saturday, Oct. 22.
The victory helped SCSU gain a weekend sweep over Minnesota and it also marked the fourth consecutive victory for the Huskies against the Gophers. The last time that SCSU lost to Minnesota was a 4-3 loss on Nov. 1, 2014. The victory moves SCSU's season record to 2-2-0, 0-0-0 NCHC, while Minnesota falls to 2-2-0, 0-0-0 B10.
In another comeback story for the second consecutive evening,the Huskies trailed 2-0 at the end of the first period before staging its victory run. The game was iced at 13:00 with a power play goal by Mikey Eyssimont that included assists from Dennis Cholowski and Jacob Benson. This was Eyssimont's second goal of the season, while it was also the second assist of the year for both Benson and Cholowski.
The Gophers created a hill for the Huskies to climb in the first period with a goal by Jack Ramsey at 2:27 of the first period. Minnesota pushed its lead to 2-0 with a power play marker by Taylor Cammarata at 18:59 of the first period.
In the second period, the Huskies kicked off their comeback with a goal by Jack Poehling at 14:40. This was his first goal as college player and it was assisted by Ryan Papa and his younger brother Ryan Poehling. The assist was Ryan Poehling's first point as collegiate skater too.
SCSU knotted the score at 2-2 with an even-strength goal by Jacob Benson at 15:33 of the second period. His goal was assisted by Daniel Tedesco and Jack Ahcan. The goal set the stage for Eyssimont's power play tally that sealed the victory after Minnesota's Vinni Lettieri was sent to the penalty box for tripping.
Zach Driscoll was the goalie of record for SCSU with his second consecutive victory. He made 29 saves in the contest and played all 60 minutes of the game. Eric Schierhorn made 30 saves in the game for UM. SCSU outshot UM 33-31, while the Huskies were 1-4 on the power play and Minnesota was 1-3.
The Huskies will continue their 2016-17 campaign on Friday, Oct. 28 and Saturday, Oct. 29 with a pair of home game against non-conference rival Alabama-Huntsville at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. - Mikey Eyssimont led the game with five shots on goal. This was his third point of the season and his 16th career goal as a Husky. He has posted a point in the last three games for the Huskies.
- Jack Ahcan has two points this season and also had an assist on Oct. 21 at Minnesota.
- Rookie Dennis Cholowski, a first round draft pick of the Detroit Red Wings in 2016, added his second college point with the assist tonight.
- Zach Driscoll has made 48 saves this season for the Huskies. His goals against average this season has dropped to 3.81 after the win tonight. The two goals is the least number of goals allowed in a game by the Huskies this season.
- Jacob Benson posted his second goal of the season and his sixth career goal tonight. He is in the midst of a three-game point streak.
- Freshman forward Jack Poehling scored his first goal as a Husky tonight. He was assisted on the play by his younger brother Ryan Poehling.
