#10 St. Cloud State scores four in 3rd to defeat UAH

St. Cloud, Minn. - The #10 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (3-2-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) used a third period power surge to gain a 5-1 victory over non-conference rival Alabama Huntsville (2-6-1, 2-3-1 WCHA) on Friday, Oct. 28 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Huskies opened the evening's scoring at 8:09 of the first period with an unassisted goal by rookie forward Jake Wahlin. This was Wahlin's third goal of the 2016-17 season. The Huskies' 1-0 lead stood until 7:51 of the second period when UAH's Josh Kestner broke the shutout with a goal.
The two squads battled through the remainder of the second period without a goal before SCSU's ignited in the final period for four goals. SCSU freshman forward Ryan Poehling tallied his first collegiate goal at 3:22 of the third period to net the game winner. Poehling was assisted on the play by freshman defenseman Jack Ahcan. The helper was Ahcan's third of the season.
SCSU pushed its lead to 3-1 with Judd Peterson's goal at 4:07 of the third with assists from Niklas Nevalainen and Wahlin. The goal was Peterson's team leading fifth score of the 2016-17 campaign and it was Nevalainen's first point of the year. The scoring flurry continued :43 later at Patrick Newell lit the lamp for the first time this season with a goal at 4:50 of the third. Assists on the play were provided by Jimmy Schuldt and Robby Jackson.
To finish the evening's scoring, Blake Winiecki connected on his second goal of the year at 8:06 of the third period. Dennis Cholowski and Newell each had assists on the play for the Huskies.
On the night, SCSU hit a season-high with 53 shots on goal and it limited the Chargers to 16 shots in the game. Jeff Smith earned his first collegiate win in the nets with 15 saves. Jordan Uhelski made 48 saves in the loss for UAH. On the power play, SCSU was 0-5 and UAH was 0-4.
The two teams will continue their weekend series on Saturday, Oct. 28 with a 7:07 p.m. home date at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
