Friesen, Pena score for the Huskies in loss to two-time defending national champions
MINNEAPOLIS—A Huskies third period rally came up empty, as the St. Cloud State women's hockey team (3-5-1, 2-4-1-1 WCHA) was upended by No. 2 Minnesota (8-1-0, 6-1-0), 5-2, Friday at Ridder Arena.
The defeat snapped SCSU's three-game unbeaten run and ran the Huskies' winless streak against the Gophers to 31 games.
Minnesota raced out to a four-goal lead, 4-0, powered by its top forward line of sophomore Sarah Potomak, junior Kelly Pannek and senior Dani Cameranesi. St. Cloud State struggled to contain the trio, which scored four of the Gophers five goals, led by Pannek's two, and totaled 11 points (4+7) on the night.
"They do everything well," head coach Eric Rud said. "They have speed, skill, finishing ability and poise. You name it. They are really hard to match up against."
As expected, Minnesota dominated possession, out-shooting St. Cloud State, 38-12, and out-attempting it, 71-26. The Huskies hung tough, though, and came back to draw within two, 4-2, with tallies from freshman forward Kayla Friesen and senior forward Payge Pena in an 85-second span near the halfway point of the third.
"Since I have been here, we haven't scored many against (Minnesota)," Rud said. "To get a couple quick, it got the bench going and let us know we don't have to sit back. We can go and make plays."
"We can learn from that and be a little more aggressive tomorrow."
Friesen's goal, which opened the scoring for SCSU, was her second in the last three games and was indicative of the player she has the potential to be, according to Rud. The Winnipeg, Manitoba native brought the puck out of the corner and ripped a shot from the right faceoff dot that beat the goaltender high.
"The puck goes into good areas when she is out there," Rud said of Friesen. "She is a smart player with a natural hockey sense, which you saw on her goal tonight. It showed the kind of things she can bring to us in the future."
St. Cloud State's comeback hopes were quickly dashed when Pannek notched her second of the evening 53 seconds after Pena's marker to push the Gophers' lead back to three.
Freshman goaltender Janine Alder made her third-straight start and, despite taking the loss, made a career high 33 saves.
The Huskies and Minnesota conclude their two-game set on Friday, October 28 at Ridder Arena. Game time is set for 7:07 p.m.
