Hannah Potrykus strikes twice, Janine Alder notches 31-save shutout to salvage split
BEMIDJI—A fast start spurred the St. Cloud State women's hockey team (5-8-1, 4-7-1-1 WCHA) to a bounce back win, 3-0, Saturday as the Huskies salvaged a series split at Bemidji State (5-9-1, 3-9-1).
Sophomore forward Hannah Potrykus scored twice to power the SCSU offense in front of freshman goaltender Janine Alder, who turned away all 31 shots she faced for her second shutout of the season.
It was evident early on that the Huskies were hungry to avenge Friday's four-goal defeat. Potrykus opened the scoring just 22 seconds into the game and St. Cloud State didn't look back after that.
"That got our momentum going and it carried through the game," head coach Eric Rud said. "To get rewarded with a good, hard-working goal early, it set the tone and got our bench excited."
Sophomore forward Ivy Dynek doubled the lead early in the second period with her second tally of the series before Potrykus stretched it to three on a partial breakaway later in the frame for her first career multi-goal effort.
"(Potrykus) has played with dedication and passion all year, but hasn't been rewarded," Rud said. "We've seen it in practice and when you see players do it in practice, it will translate to games. We were waiting for that from her and it definitely happened tonight."
After allowing a season-high six goals to the Beavers on Friday, Alder and the St. Cloud State defense rebounded in a big way. While the Huskies were out-shot, 31-14, they did well to limit the quality of those chances and Alder was there for the ones that did get through—stopping 30-plus shots for the second-straight game and for the sixth time this season.
"(Alder) was on top of her game," Rud said. "To get a shutout on the road in this league is pretty impressive."
"But our whole team played with a chip on its shoulder. We had a completely different level of jump and intensity."
Up next for St. Cloud State is a Thanksgiving weekend trip to Burlington, Vt., for the Windjammer Classic. The Huskies will open the tournament against host Vermont on Friday, November 25 at 4 p.m., and either Robert Morris or Clarkson on Saturday, November 26.
