St. Cloud State lead slips away in 5-3 loss to Robert Morris

Third period penalties doomed the Huskies in Windjammer Classic consolation game
BURLINGTON, Vt.—Leading by two in the third period, the St. Cloud State women's hockey team (5-10-1, 4-7-1-1 WCHA) could not hold on and fell to Robert Morris (10-1-5, 5-0-1 CHA), 5-3, in the consolation game of the Windjammer Classic on Saturday.
Senior forward Lauren Hespenheide and junior forward Alyssa Erickson staked the Huskies to a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes and freshman forward Kayla Friesen pushed the edge to two with 14:22 to play, but a pair of penalties tilted the tide of the game.
After the Colonials drew back within one just 26 seconds after Friesen's goal, SCSU was whistled for two penalties in a 1:37 span, putting it at a 5-on-3 disadvantage. Robert Morris capitalized six seconds later to tie the game.
"Being down 5-on-3 changed the momentum of things," Rud said. "It was out of our hands, but we did not deal with it very well. It's something for us to learn and grow from."
"You have to learn to not let outside influences change your mentality."
RMU struck with 2:43 left in the game and added an empty-netter to complete the comeback. Colonials freshman forward Jaycee Gebhard powered the rally with a hat trick.
"We competed hard and carried the play for the majority of the game," Rud said. "They had some high-end players that made some plays and we did not capitalize on chances we had to score another goal or two to put the game away."
Hespenheide opened the scoring in the second period on the power play. It was the senior captain's first goal of the season and the Huskies first power play goal since October 22 at Minnesota State—snapping an 0-for-17 stretch with the man advantage.
Friesen (1+1) and sophomore forward Julia Tylke (0+2) led the SCSU effort with two point apiece. Tylke's effort capped a three-point weekend for the Delafield, Wis., native.
St. Cloud State returns to WCHA play next weekend, Friday, December 2 and Friday, December 3, at home against Minnesota Duluth. Game time is 7:07 p.m. on Friday and 3:07 p.m. on Saturday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. All SCSU students will be admitted for free with a valid student ID.
