#1 UMD rallies to gain 5-3 victory over #8 SCSU

St. Cloud, Minn. - The #8 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (4-4-0, 0-2-0 NCHC) was the victim of another late rally by #1 Minnesota Duluth (7-1-2, 4-0-0 NCHC) in a tough 5-3 setback on Saturday, Nov. 5 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
Down 3-1 in the second period, the Bulldogs responded with four unanswered goals in the remainder of the contest to capture the NCHC victory.
The Huskies' Robby Jackson repeated his early game heroics as he scored once again in the opening minute of play. Jackson provided SCSU with a quick 1-0 lead with his second goal of the year at the :53 mark of the first period. Will Borgen added the solo assist on the play, which was Borgen's sixth assist of the year.
UMD knotted the score at 1-1 at 4:04 of the first with an unassisted goal by Joey Anderson. The Huskies capped the first period with a goal by Jacob Benson at 18:41 of the first period. His handiwork around the net was assisted by Dennis Cholowski and Daniel Tedesco. This was Benson's third goal of the year.
In the second period, SCSU padded its lead to 3-1 with a power play marker by Blake Winiecki at 15:43. Cholowski and Jake Wahlin each had assists on the play for the Huskies. This was Winiecki's fourth goal of the season and it marked Cholowski fifth assist of the year.
The tide turned late in the second period at Dominic Toninato scored at 18:23 to close the gap to 3-2.
In the third period, the Bulldogs tied the game at 3-3 with an unassisted goal by Carson Soucy at 7:33. UMD's Parker Mackay added the game winner at 14:42 on an assist from Neal Pionk. To end the night's scoring, the Bulldogs' Soucy scored an ENG at 18:45 to make the final 5-3 for the second consecutive night.
SCSU outshot the Bulldogs 34-32 in the contest. Zach Driscoll made 27 saves in the loss for the Huskies, while Hunter Miska added 31 saves in the win for UMD. On the power play, SCSU was 1-4 and UMD was 0-1. The Huskies were only whistled for one penalty in the game.
SCSU will continue its 2016-17 season on Nov. 11-12 with a pair of road games at the World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo. against NCHC rival Colorado College. Fans can listen to both games on REV 96.7 with Jim Erickson making the call from CC.
