Huskies and Broncos skate to 5-5 deadlock on Dec. 3

WMU wins extra league point with 1-0 shootout win
Kalamazoo, Mich. - The #17 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team maintained its success at Western Michigan University with a 5-5 OT decision in Kalamazoo, Mich. on Dec. 3. The game moves SCSU's overall record to 7-6-1, 3-4-1-0 NCHC while WMU is 7-4-3, 3-4-1-1 NCHC. The Broncos picked up the extra league point with a 1-0 win in the shootout session after the overtime play.
The tie game also pushes SCSU's all-time record in games played at Western Michigan to 4-0-2 since 2011.
In an offensive showcase, the Broncos broke into the scoring columni with a goal by Sheldon Dries at 3:41 of the first period. WMU stretched its lead to 2-0 with a marker by Matheson Iacopelli at 14:56 of the first period.
To end the first period scoring, Mikey Eyssimont posted a 5x3 power play marker at 16:53 with assists from Jimmy Schuldt and Blake Winiecki. This was Eyssimont's team leading eighth goal of the 2016-17 campaign.
In the second period, Jacob Benson tied the contest for the Huskies at 9:21 with power play assists from Jack Ahcan and Eyssimont. On the power play again, Benson posted his second goal of the evening at 10:43 of the second period to make it 3-2. Eyssimont and Ahcan each had assists on the play, which was Benson's fifth goal of the year.
On the night, Eyssimont had two assists and one goal to push his season scoring total to 14 points. Ahcan also leads the team in 2016-17 with 10 assists.
The high-flying second period continued with a goal by WMU's Wade Allison at 11:27 of the second period that made it 3-3. SCSU charged right back into the fray with a goal by Ryan Poehling at 14:27 of the second period. He was assisted by his brother Nick Poehling on the play, which was his fourth goal of the winter.
WMU tied the contest again at 4-4 with a marker by Hugh McGing at 15:33 of the 2nd period before Will Borgen gave the Huskies a brief 5-4 lead at 19:51 of the second period on a play that included a solo assist from Patrick Newell. This was Borgen's first goal of the season and his second career goal as a Husky. To complete the regulation time scoring, WMU tied the game up in the third period with a goal by Mike McKee at 14:41 of the third period.
Both teams went scoreless in the first OT session and also failed to score in the 3x3 OT session. In the shootout, the Broncos picked up the extra point with the winning goal by Allison.
In the game, SCSU was outshot by WMU 34-23. SCSU goalie Zach Driscoll made 29 saves in the game, while Trevor Gorsuch had 8 saves before being relieved by Colin Olson, who was the goalie of record with 10 saves and two goals allowed. On the power play, SCSU was a solid 3-5 and WMU was 0-3. On the weekend, SCSU was 8-of-8 on the penalty kill.

TEDDY BEAR TOSS: Fans should mark Dec. 10 on their calendars for the annual Teddy Bear Toss at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. SCSU will host Omaha that night and fans are encouraged to bring a new or gently used Teddy Bear or stuffed animal toy to throw onto the ice during the first intermission. All Teddy Bears and stuffed animals collected during the Toss will then be donated to the local Toys for Tots campaign in St. Cloud, which helps the area's needy during the holiday season.
