St. Cloud State rally falls short against No. 4 Minnesota Duluth, 3-2

Despite a strong third period, the Huskies suffered their fourth straight loss
ST. CLOUD—A furious third period effort went for naught, as the St. Cloud State women's hockey team (5-12-1, 4-9-1-1 WCHA), suffered a sweep-sealing defeat, 3-2, at the hands of No. 4 Minnesota Duluth (12-3-3, 9-3-2-1) on Saturday.
The loss extended the Huskies season-long losing streak to four games.
After the Bulldogs roared to the lead in the second period, senior forward Lauren Hespenheide ignited the Huskies in the third with her second goal of the season to bring them within one with 12:02 to play.
St. Cloud State poured on the pressure in the final frame, out-shooting UMD, 13-6, including a flurry of scoring chances in the final minute with the extra attacker on, but came up empty in its search for an equalizer.
Head coach Eric Rud believes Saturday's third period is indicative of the level the Huskies are capable of competing at, but he was disappointed it took until the final 20 minutes of the series for them to reach it.
Minnesota Duluth boasted a 22-6 edge in shots on goal and had nearly 80 percent of the shot attempts in the first two periods, in which Rud said his team lacked the requisite energy.
"We started playing in the third period and had some jump, but we have to find a way to get going before that," he said. "I am not much of a moral victory guy. You need to play a full game.
"We've had belief from the get-go that this team can compete on any night, but it can only happen if we can get going from that start."
Senior defenseman Caroline Markstrom provided a potential early spark, opening the scoring just under six minutes into the game and staking SCSU to an early 1-0 lead—but UMD's suffocating possession advantage acted as a wet blanket on the Huskies' brief momentum.
"There is a deficiency in energy that results from constantly chasing the puck," Rud said. "We have to come out of those situations better and not let it suck our energy down."
The Bulldogs dictated the pace following Markstrom's goal and played "tip-tac-toe" to tie the score and eventually take the lead, tallying three unanswered goals on tip plays in an 11:07 span between the end of the first and the halfway point of the second. And despite Hespenheide and SCSU's best efforts in the third, that rally proved to be decisive.
St. Cloud State will seek to curb its four-game skid when it returns to the ice on Saturday, December 10 and Sunday, December 11 on the road at North Dakota. Game time is 2:07 p.m. on both days in Grand Forks, N.D.
