#5 St. Cloud State edges Western Michigan 4-3 in OT

The #5 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (28-8-1) earned a 4-3 overtime victory over Western Michigan University (8-24-3) in the first round of play in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference tournament on Friday, March 11 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Huskies gained the victory on the stength of an overtime goal by Patrick Newell at the 16:31 mark of the OT session. Â Jimmy Schuldt and Ryan Papa provided assists on the play, which was Newell's seventh goal of the 2015-16 season.
In a tight playoff battle, the Huskies opened the night's scoring at 16:10 of the first period with a power play goal by Jimmy Murray. Â Schuldt and Niklas Nevalainen each had assists on the play. Â This was Murray's 13th goal of the season.
WMU's Frederik Tiffels tied the game at 3:55 of the second period with assists from Mike Rebry and Chris Dienes. Â The Broncos grabbed a 2-1 lead at 12:30 of the second with a goal by Neal Goff.
The Huskies knotted the score at 2-2 with a goal by Will Borgen at 15:37 of the second period. Â Joey Benik and Murray each had assists on the play, which was the first collegiate goal at SCSU for Borgen.
In the third period, Kalle Kossila scored his 14th goal of the season at 5:03 with a solo assist from Murray. Â WMU then forced the OT session with a goal at 13:55 by Colt Conrad.
In the game, SCSU outshot the Broncos 45-30 as Charlie Lindgren posted his 27th win of the year with 27 saves in the game. Â On the power play, SCSU was 1-4 and WMU was 0-1.
The Huskies and Broncos will continue their best of three playoff series at 7:07 p.m. on Saturday, March 12 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
