Men’s Basketball Returns Home This Weekend To Host A Pair of NSIC Opponents

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The St. Cloud State men's basketball team (14-9, 10-4 NSIC) returns home this weekend to Halenbeck Hall to host a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) opponents. The program starts the week by welcoming in Wayne State College (6-14, 4-10 NSIC) for an 8 p.m. game on Friday, Jan. 27. The team then sees the defending NCAA Division National Champion Augustana University Vikings (14-6, 9-5 NSIC) come to Halenbeck Hall for a 6 p.m. contest on Saturday, Jan. 28

Additionally, each of the two games will have a theme attached. The theme on Friday will be Toga Night - where all fans are encouraged to dress in togas. The game on Saturday is a WHITE OUT – where all fans are asked to wear white to support the Huskies. Also at halftime of the game, former SCSU women's basketball player and track athlete Heather Miller-Koch will be recognized on the court for having participated in the 2016 Rio Olympics in the heptathlon.

Scouting Wayne State College Wildcats

The Wildcats are coached by Jeff Kaminsky, who is in his first year running the program and 30th season overall as a collegiate head coach.
Wayne State went 1-1 last weekends on the road with an overtime 66-63 victory over Winona State (1/20) and a five-point loss to Upper Iowa, 77-72 (1/21).
WSC has a better road record (4-6) and than home record (2-6) this season.
The four wins on the road are more than the previous two seasons combined (1).
Wayne State tops the league in forced turnovers (13.86) and ranks second in steal (135).
The program has dropped four of the last five games.
WSC has played three overtime contests this season (1-2 record).
Kendall Jacks is the leading scorer for the program at 14.8 points per game.
Matt Thomas is also averaging in double figures at 11.2 points a contest.
Jordan Cornelius averages 9.4 points and a team-leading 5.4 rebounds per game.
Vance Janssen leads the team in steals (33) plus assists (47) and also puts up 9.1 points per game.

Scouting Augustana University Vikings

The Vikings are coached by Tom Billeter, who is in his 14th year running the program and 19th campaign as a collegiate head coach.
Augustana won the NCAA Division II National Championship last season with a 90-81 victory over Lincoln Memorial.
The Vikings have won four of the last six games including a split road weekend trip against Upper Iowa (L, 95-91) and Winona State (W, 73-71).
Five of the team's six losses this season have come by five points or less.
The program is second in the NSIC in offensive rebounding (11.2), three-point field goals per game (9.3), assists (16.7) and turnovers forced (13.85).
The Vikings are the top team in the league in scoring margin (10.5).
Augustana is a well-balanced team that features five players averaging better than nine points a game.
Jordan Spencer leads the club with his average of 16.1 points per game and averages a conference-leading 7.6 assists per game.
Spencer is also third in the league in steals (33).
Mike Busack, a graduate transfer from Minnesota State, sport an average of 14.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.
Busack also leads the team with his 43 made threes.
Adam Beyer picks up 12.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.
John Warren has an average of 9.9 points per game and has also totaled 25 steals.
Steven Schaefer produces 9.1 points per game off the bench while shooting 56.5 percent from the field and 61.7 percent from three-point range.
Lucas Walford is third in the conference in blocks (26).

Prior Meetings

St. Cloud State is 18-3 all-time against Wayne State College in a series that started in 1960-61.
The program has also won the last seven contests against the Wildcats including a 108-74 victory last season on the road (1/16/16).
Gage Davis led the team with 36 points and 13 rebounds.
Scottie Stone contributed a career-high 34 points.
The 108 points scored was the most for the program since scoring 120 against Dakota State during the 2008-09 season
The SCSU program is 46-40 all-time against Augustana University.
The program has lost the last two games to AU including a 102-63 loss to the Vikings last season on the road (1/15/16).
The 39-point defeat was the largest for the program since the 2001-02 season.
The 102 points allowed was one of four times in the last 261 games that the team has allowed more 100 or more points.
Stone scored 13 points to lead the team with Davis putting up 11 in the loss.

St. Cloud State, even after going 1-2 last week, have won 11 of the last 15 games.
The program has won seven straight (all conference games) at home and nine of the last 10 at Halenbeck Hall.
The team's 14 wins this season are already more than the program had all of last season and the 10 wins in league play equal the amount for the program from a season ago.
The team's current two-game losing streak is the first for the program since early November.
The Huskies started a very busy last week with a 79-65 victory over Minnesota Duluth (1/17).
Scottie Stone set the school's career three-point record with his 251st made triple on his way to 29 points against the Bulldogs.

Jon Averkamp had a career-day with 21 points and 14 rebounds against UMD.
Gage Davis put up 10 points, five rebounds and four assists against the Bulldogs.
Andy Foley tallied seven points, a career-high nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals against Minnesota Duluth.
The Huskies then dropped an 82-73 game on the road to Northern State (1/20).
The program fell behind by 11 in the first half and were forced to play catch for much of the evening.
The team eventually tied the game at 65 all with just under five minutes remaing, but the Wolves closed the game on a 17-8 run.
Davis led the team with 28 points and two blocks.
Stone totaled 15 points.
Averkamp put up 11 points.
Mark Hall recorded 12 points plus three assists.
Alex O'Neill was able to contribute seven points and seven rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench.
The Huskies were also held to a seasonlow nine assists in the game against NSU.
SCSU came out strong against MSU Moorhead and led by five at the break, 41-36, before seeing the Dragons soar to 51 points in the second half in their 87-82 victory (1/21).
Davis again led the team with 29 points and added 12 rebounds.
Itwas his eighth double-double of the season and the 18th of his career.
Stone hit five threes in scoring 21 points in the loss to MSU Moorhead.
It was Stone's 11th game with 20 or more points this season.
Averkamp scored in double figures for the third time in as many games and 13th time this season with 15 points against the Dragons.
Foley had another steady all-around game with nine points and nine rebounds.
The Dragons' Ayob Ayob scored an opponent high of 31 points against SCSU in helping gain his team the victory.

Up Next

The Huskies will be on the road for each of the next two weekends.
The program takes on Concordia St.-Paul (4-17, 1-13 NSIC) on Friday, Feb. 3, at 8 p.m. and then travels to play against Minnesota State (13-7, 8-6 NSIC) on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 6 p.m.
The program is 18-6 all-time against CSP since the schools started playing each other during the 1999-2000 season.
SCSU won last year's contest by a 96-71 score at home (1/3/16).
Gage Davis had 32 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists in that game.
Scottie Stone tallied 22.
The Huskies fell by a 59-57 score the last time the programs met in St. Paul.
SCSU has won four of the last five games against the Golden Bears.
St. Cloud State fell to Minnesota State in a non-conference game earlier this season, 76-62 (11/26/16).
Davis had 17 points and nine rebounds in the loss.
Kurt Hall put up 16 points and 11 rebounds.
The Huskies are 95-84 all-time against the Mavericks since the first meeting during the 1923-24 season.
SCSU has dropped its last six games to MSU though.
