Huskies collect 2-1 victory over #20 Bemidji State on Jan. 27

St. Paul, Minn. - The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (12-12-1, 6-9-1 NCHC) gained a 2-1 victory over #20 ranked Bemidji State University (16-10-3, 16-4-2 NCHC) on Friday, Jan. 27 in game one of the North Star Cup tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.
The Huskies will now advance to the North Star Cup championship game against the winner of tonight's game against Minnesota and Minnesota Duluth. The championship game will take place at 7 p.m. at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Tickets for the game are available at the gate or through Ticketmaster (ticketmaster.com).
Fans are invited to a pre-game social at The Liffey in St. Paul. The Liffey is located across the street from the Xcel Energy Center and the social begins two hours before the start of the games on Saturday.
In a defensive battle in game one, SCSU scored first with a power play marker by Jacob Benson at 6:01 of the first period. Benson's goal was assisted by Blake Winiecki and Jack Ahcan. The goal was Benson's seventh of the season and it was Winiecki's 11th assist of the year and Ahcan's 13th assist.
In the second period, SCSU stretched its lead to 2-0 with the eventual game winner by Winiecki at 7:16 of the period. Nick Poehling and Mikey Eyssimont each had assists on the play, which was Winiecki's 11th goal of the year.
Bemidji State broke the shutout at 17:35 with a second period goal by Zach Whitecloud. Leo Fitzgerald and Myles Fitzgerald each had assists on the play for the Beavers.
In the final period, both teams battled to a scoreless tie as each squad had eight shots apiece. In the game, BSU outshot the Huskies 27-21. SCSU's Jeff Smith was the goalie of record with 26 saves to his credit. Michael Bitzer had 19 saves in the loss for the Beavers. On the power play, SCSU was 1-4 and the Huskies were 3-3 on the penalty kill in the game.
