Women's Basketball Falls at Home 75-63 to Wayne State

St. Cloud, Minn.- The St. Cloud State Women's Basketball team dropped a tough loss to Wayne State College 75-63 on Jan. 27 at Halenbeck Hall.
The Huskies (8-11, 6-9 NSIC) struggled to get their game going, letting the Wildcats (15-5, 10-5 NSIC) get out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. The Huskies would get on the board but the Wildcats would maintain their lead, going into the second quarter up on the home team 20-12.
The second quarter would see much more balanced play as the two teams would each add 17 points in the frame. The Wildcat's eight point lead would hold as the final horn of the first half would ring out, as the Huskies would back to the locker room down 37-29.
The two teams would come out of the half with strong play, but the Huskies would start to put some strain on the Wildcat's lead, closing the eight points down to a four point lead four minutes into the quarter. Wayne State would prove to be unrattled by the Huskies' advances as they would mount a quick 4-0 run to get back out to an eight point lead. The momentum would stay in the Wildcat's corner, as they would lead 61-50 going into the final frame.
The visitors would go on another mini-run getting up on the Huskies by 16 points. St. Cloud State would close the gap by a few, but it would not be enough and the Wildcats would walk away with the 75-63 win.
The Huskies excelled over the Wildcats in two key offensive categories in the loss, as they outscored Wayne State 17-8 in second chance points, and 16-9 in bench points.
St. Cloud State was led offensively on the night by senior Betsy MacDonald who registered 17 points in the loss. Andrea Thomas would add 14 points, and Chelsea Nooker would put up 11 points in the game. Nooker, Brianna Johnson, Madelin Dammann, and Kassidy Steen would all grab seven rebounds on the night to lead the team. Nooker would also dish up 5 assists to her teammates.
The Wildcats were led by Paige Ballinger with 21 points.
The Huskies will close out their home stand Jan. 28 versus Augustana in a day full of Alumni Night activities. Tip off for the game is set for 4 p.m., following an Alumni game at 2 p.m. A special ceremony will be held to recognize the accomplishment of women's basketball alum Heather Miller Koch who competed for the United States in the Olympics this past summer. She will be honored at halftime of the men's basketball game versus Augustana set to begin at 6 p.m. Tickets are still available online at scsutickets.com or at the gate.
