St. Cloud State men's hockey drops second game at Miami on Jan. 7

Oxford, Ohio - The #20 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team lost a 4-1 decision at Miami University on Saturday, Jan. 7. The loss drops SCSU's record to 9-10-1, 4-7-1 NCHC, while Miami improved to 7-8-5, 3-4-3 NCHC in 2016-17.
In another close defensive battle for the majority of the contest, Miami gained the upperhand at 10:09 of the first period with a shorthanded goal by Kiefer Sherwood. The RedHawks managed to hold their 1-0 lead until the 1:02 mark of the third period when Miami's Gordie Green notched the GWG.
The Huskies' Jake Wahlin broke the shutout at 13:58 of the third period with his fourth goal of the season. He was assisted on the play by Jimmy Schuldt and Dennis Cholowski.
SCSU's rally was short lived as Miami came back at 15:10 of the third period with a power play goal by Josh Melnick, which made the tally 3-1. In the closing minute of play, Miami's Grant Hutton made it 4-1 with his empty net goal at 19:17.
In the game, SCSU outshout the RedHawks 29-22. SCSU was 0-of-6 on the power play and MU was 1-of-3 on the advantage in the contest. In the nets, Jeff Smith made 18 saves and Ryan Larkin had 28 saves for Miami.
SCSU will continue its 2016-17 season with a pair of road games at Minnesota Duluth on Firday, Jan. 13 and Saturday, Jan. 14. Fans can listen to both games on REV 96.7FM.
