Women’s Basketball Earns 67-42 Season Opening Win Over Valley City State

St. Cloud, Minn. – Freshman Tori Wortz had a memorable debut in leading the St. Cloud State women's basketball team (1-0) to a 67-42 victory over Valley City State on Friday, Nov. 10, at Halenbeck Hall.
Wortz scored a game-high 18 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field, 4-of-6 shooting from the charity stripe and two made threes. She also had five rebounds, a block and two steals. Senior Andrea Thomas also reached double figures with 16 points plus six assists, three steals and five rebounds. Senior Amanda Christianson totaled six points and five rebounds. Redshirt junior Mallie Doucette picked up six rebounds. Freshman Nikki Kilboten had four points and four rebounds off the bench.
Alli Vandal led the Vikings with her eight points and seven rebounds. Hannah Schlecht recorded seven points. Paige Meyer, Mackenzie Huber and Kennedy Henningsgard all had six points
The Huskies shot 42.6 percent from the field (20-for-47) and 42.1 percent from three-point range (8-for-19). The team hit 19 free throws in 27 attempts plus held a 43-33 rebounding edge. The Vikings were limited to 25.9 percent shooting from the field and only hit their threes at a 20 percent clip (5-for-25).
The Huskies led 35-21 at the half and outscored VCSU by a 32-21 margin in the last 20 minutes of game time. SCSU's largest lead of the game was 28 points in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Their was only one lead change in the contest with SCSU controlling the game from the nearly the opening tip.
The St. Cloud State women's program keeps the homestand going and hosts Nortland College next Saturday, Nov. 18, at 2 p.m. at Halenbeck Hall.
