St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State 2018-19 volleyball recruiting class continued to pick up honors at the end of their high school seasons.
"I'm very happy for these young women as they've had this success at the end of their high school careers," head coach Chad Braegelmann said. "It was fun watching our Minnesota recruits in the state tournament and we are certainly hoping their experiences at the high school level will help them move our program forward when they get to St. Cloud State."
Rachel Houle (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area H.S.) was a First Team All-State selection in Class AAA. Houle, along with fellow incoming Huskies recruit Katie Krenz (Oakdale, Minn./Stillwater Area H.S.), also helped lead their Stillwater Area High School team to the Class AAA State Tournament. Madison Hucky (Waconia, Minn./Mayer Lutheran) helped lead her Mayer Lutheran team to a state championship in Class A for the second straight season. Hucky was also First Team All-State in Class A and named to the state's All-Tournament team this season in Class A. Allison Naughton (Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic H.S.) helped lead her Dowling Catholic High School team to the Class 5A State Tournament and earned selection to the 2017 Academic All-State Team.
The 2017 SCSU volleyball team are coming off a season where they went 16-14 with a mark of 8-12 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). The team's 16 wins are the most since 2004 and only the third time since 1998 that the program has won 15 or more matches in a season. The team's winning record was also the first for the program since 2004. The team had an impressive 4-1 mark in five-game sets this season. The program's eight wins in the NSIC were the most in a season since 2013 when the program also won eight league matches. The eight league wins are also only the third time since joining the NSIC in 2008 that the program has won eight or more matches against the always ultra-competitive league opponents.
Sophomore Clara Krenz was named to the NSIC's Second Team All-Conference team for the first time in her career. Krenz also picked up a pair of Defensive Player of the Week Awards this season on Sept. 25 and Nov. 6. She was also named to the 2017 Cougar Classic All-Tournament Team and the 2017 Keweenaw Classic All-Tournament Team. Also on the Cougar Classic Tournament Team this season from SCSU was seniors Becca Gruber and Nicole Miller along with junior Krista Kuglin.
Krenz led the NSIC in both total digs (628) and digs per set (5.92) this season. Her 628 digs are the second-most in a single season in school history and made her just the second player to achieve 600 or more digs in a season. Krenz also passed the 1,000-dig mark in her career this year in only her second season with the program. She has totaled 1,075 digs in her career to move to seventh all-time in career digs.
