Huskies turn in top performances at Finn Grinkaer Open on Nov. 18

The #2 St. Cloud State University wrestling team continued the open portion of its 2017-18 with a trip to the Finn Grinaker Open at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. on Nov. 18.
The Huskies gained six top finishes in the Gold Division brackets at the tournament. Of note, the tournament was an Open format and no team scores were kept. The tournament was divided into the Gold Division and the Maroon Division.
SCSU's Brandon Briggs scored a first place finish in the Gold Division 125 pound bracket with a 4-0 record that included two falls and a major decision. At 133-pounds, Adam Hedin placed first with a 3-0 record that included a 12-6 win over teammate Jordan Aquino in the title bout at 133. At 141-pounds, SCSU's Jarred Oftedahl and Travis Swanson both had 2-0 records while Jake Barzowski placed first at 149 pounds with a 2-1 win over South Dakota State's Michael Prieto in the title match.
At 165-pounds Devin FitzPatrick placed second with a 2-1 record and Alex Anaya was second at 174-pounds with a 3-1 record that included a close 3-2 loss to Minnesota Bailee O'Reilly. SCSU's Vince Dietz tallied a first place finish for the Huskies at 197-pounds. He was 3-0 on the day and won the top spot with an 11-2 win over teammate Noah Ryan.
To cap the day, Lawrence Phillips continued to carry on the tradition of strength at 285-pounds that has been a trademark of the SCSU program over the past several seasons. Phillips won first place honors at the Finn with a 5-0 record. Of note, SCSU's Devin Donovan charted a first place finish for the Huskies in the Maroon Division 165-pound bracket.
