Men’s Basketball Rallies Past The University of Mary, 77-66

Bismarck, N.D.– Senior Jon Averkamp picked up a game-high 23 points to lead the St. Cloud State (9-4, 5-2 NSIC) to a comeback 77-66 road victory over the University of Mary (2-10, 0-6 NSIC) on Sunday, Dec. 31, at the McDowell Activity Center
Averkamp shot 10-for-14 from the field in getting his 23 points plus had three steals in the victory. Junior Gage Davis tallied 21 points and eight rebounds. Davis also had two assists and a steal. Sean Smith totaled a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. He also had a career-high seven assists, two blocks and two steals. Senior Andy Foley had a steady game with 10 points, eight rebounds and two steals.
The University of Mary had a pair of players reach double figures and were led by 17 points from Matthew Kreklow. Kreklow also had four rebounds. Keith Hunter recorded 12 points and four rebounds. Jaylan White had a game-high six assists plus three steals. Connor Hellebust had eight points and four rebounds.
The Huskies shot 51.9 percent from the field (28-for-54), 20 percent from three-point range (5-for-20) and 72.7 percent from the free throw line (16-for-22). The team also had 31 rebounds, 19 assists, two blocks and 11 steals. Mary shot 44.4 percent from the field (20-for-45), 30 percent from three-point range (6-for-20) and 87 percent from the free throw line (20-for-23).
The Huskies trailed at the half 33-32, but outscored the Marauders 45-33 in the second half. The game featured seven tied scores and 13 lead changes. The Huskies largest lead with 11 points, which they had twice, with the last time being the second of two made free throws from Davis at the 1:20 mark to make the final score 77-66. The team was able to take the lead for good at the 8:32 mark of the second half, 57-55, on a made jumper from Averkamp.
St. Cloud State men's basketball team next returns home to host Bemidji State on Jan. 5 at 8 p.m. and Minnesota Crookston on Jan. 6 at 6 p.m.

- The team is now 5-0 this season when limiting teams to 69 points or fewer.
- The program has won six of the eight games in the month of December.
