Men’s Basketball Takes on Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State This Weekend

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The St. Cloud State men's basketball team (5-2, 2-0 NSIC), after spending the last two weekends on the road, returns home to host a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) opponents this weekend at Halenbeck Hall. The team hosts Sioux Falls (7-1, 3-0 NSIC) on Friday night, Dec. 8, at 8 p.m. The program continues the home stand the following evening with a contest on Saturday, Dec. 9, at 6 p.m. against Southwest Minnesota State (6-3, 2-1 NSIC).

There will also be a pair of promotions this weekend at the games. On Friday, all fans are encouraged to wear their Ugly Christmas Sweaters for a chance to win prizes. On Saturday, it will be a Teddy Bear Toss, where fans are asked to bring new or gently used teddy bears or stuffed animals with them that will be collected at the ticket entrances for both the women's and men's basketball games and be tossed on the ice during the second intermission of the hockey game that evening.

Scouting Sioux Falls

Sioux Falls has won seven of the team's first eight games with the only loss on the season coming in a non-conference game on the road against Minnesota Crookston.
The team is 3-0 in NSIC play after sweeping Winona State (80-64) and Upper Iowa (90-78) last weekend at home.
The program has risen to No. 7 in the D2SIDA Central Region rankings in the most recent poll.
The team arrives in St. Cloud having won four games in a row.
Drew Guebert is leading the conference with his average of 24.3 points per game.
Guebert is shooting 54.9 percent from the field, 47.8 percent from beyond the arc and 82.6 percent from the free throw line.
He is also averaging 6.3 rebounds per game to rank second on the team.
Trevon Evans, a transfer in his first year with the program is putting up 19.3 points per game, while shooting 50 percent from the field, 40.5 percent from three-point range and 80.5 percent from the free throw line.
Evans also leads the team and ranks eighth in the league in rebounding with his average of 7.3 boards per game.
Jerrod Walton is also averaging in double figures at 14.3 points per game.
Walton is also getting five rebounds per game and leads the team with eight steals.
Sioux Falls is averaging 88 points per game this season, while shooting 49.5 percent from the field, 41 percent from three-point range and 75.5 percent from the free throw line.
The team has scored 90 or more points in five of the seven games.
The Cougars are coached by Chris Johnson, who is in his 10th year leading the program and 11th season overall as a collegiate head coach.

Scouting Southwest Minnesota State

Southwest Minnesota State, who are predicted to place second in the NSIC this season, are off to a 6-3 start overall and have a mark of 2-1 in league play.
The team plays on Friday night at Minnesota Duluth before continuing the trip to St. Cloud.
The program swept Upper Iowa (93-86) and Winona State (79-76) last weekend at home.
The team has been led by Ryan Bruggeman
Bruggeman, who was named the NSIC South Division Player of the Week on Monday, is averaging 18.2 points per game to rank seventh in the conference.
He is also the team leader in assists (45) and steals (18).
His average of 5.0 assists per game in fifth in the conference.
Bruggeman is also shooting 46.4 percent from the field, 40 percent from three-point range and 85.2 percent from the free throw line.
Carter Kirk is putting up 13.1 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.
Kirk is second in the league with his average of 8.8 rebounds per game.
He is shooting 57.1 percent from the field and leads the team with his 11 blocks.
K.J. Davis is also averaging in double figures at 10.7 points per game.
Davis is the top free throw shooter on the team at 91.7 percent
Southwest Minnesota State is averaging 80.8 points per game and shooting 48.3 percent from the field, 39.2 percent from three-point range and 75.4 percent from the free throw line.
The team is coached by Brad Bigler, who is in his ninth year leading the program.
He became the school's all-time victories leader last Saturday with his 142nd career win.

Prior Meetings

SCSU is 10-2 all-time against Sioux Falls since the teams first started meeting in 1986-87.
St. Cloud State was able to defeat USF on the road last season by a 90-74 score (12/9/16).
The 90 points scored was one of 11 times last season that the program scored 90 or more points.
Scottie Stone had 28 points against the Cougars.
Gage Davis put up 17 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Jon Averkamp totaled 16 points and eight rebounds.
St. Cloud State is 40-20 all-time against Southwest Minnesota State since the first meeting in 1969-70.
The program fell to the Mustangs by an 84-82 score on the road last season (12/10/16).
Davis had 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Andy Foley totaled 16 points and eight rebounds.
Averkamp recorded 17 points.
Trevon Marshall picked up 10 points and five assists.
Stone had 11 points against SMSU.

Notables

The Huskies opened NSIC play with a pair of road victories last weekend.
The program started the week with a 69-57 victory over Minnesota Crookston (12/1/17).
Junior Brindley Theisen led the team in scoring with his 19 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field and 5-for-6 marksmanship from three-point range.
Junior Sean Smith came within one rebound of his third double-double and ended up with 15 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
Sophomore Trevon Marshall scored in double figures for the second straight game with 13 points.
Senior Jon Averkamp had nine points and six rebounds.
Senior Andy Foley had a season-high seven rebounds in the game.
Freshman Tristen Hull recorded six points and five rebounds.
St. Cloud State continued the road trip the following evening with a dominate 96-62 victory over Bemidji State (12/2/17).
Junior Gage Davis played in his first game of the season and scored 25 points plus had nine rebounds in 26 minutes.
It was the 60th time that Davis has scored in double figures in 63 career games at SCSU.
His 25 points marked his 23rd time getting 25 or more points.
Averkamp tied for the team lead with 25 points.
It was his fourth game scoring 25 or more points this season and the sixth time in the team's seven games that he had led or tied for the lead in scoring.
Theisen scored 11 points
Freshman Drew Lewis scored eight points.
Junior Jace Kitchen recorded a season-high five points.
The 96 points scored in the game was the most for the program since getting 97 against MSU Moorhead last season (2/17/17).
The program shot 55.6 percent from the field, 40.9 percent from three-point range and 77.8 percent from the free throw line in the win over BSU this season.
The game marked the third time in seven games this season that SCSU had led from start to finish.
The 34-point in league play was the largest for the program since also getting a 34-point win over Wayne State College, 108-74, during the 2015-16 season.
SCSU is 4-0 this season when scoring 69 or more points and 1-2 when allowing 69 or more points.
St. Cloud State ranks in the top half of the conference in blocked shots (3.0 – 5th), defensive rebounds per game (26.43 – 6th), fewest turnovers (76 – 3rd), field goal percentage defense (41.3 – 3rd), offensive rebounds per game (41.3 – 3rd), rebounding margin (2.4 – 5th), scoring defense (64.1 – 2nd), scoring margin (8.6 – 4th), steals per game (6.6 – 4th), three-point field goal defense (34.5 – 6th), total blocks, 21 – 7th), total steals (46 – 8th), turnover margin (4.9 – 2nd), turnovers per game (15.71 – 1st) and win-loss percentage (71.4 -4th)
Averkamp is fourth in the NSIC in scoring at 20.1 points per game, fifth in field goal percentage (56.3), second in offensive rebounding (3.29) and 10thh overall in rebounding (7.0).
Sean Smith leads the conference in rebounds (10.1) and offensive rebounds per game (3.43), is second in blocked shots (2.14) and defensive rebounds per game (6.71).
Theisen is third on the team with his average of 14.4 points per game.
He has scored in double figures in six of the seven games
Theisen is ninth in the league in three-pointers per game (2.43).
Junior Adam Heede-Andersen leads the team in assists per game (3.00), total assists (21) and steals (10).
