Men’s Basketball Drops 104-97 Overtime Thriller To No. 21 MSU Moorhead

ST. CLOUD, Minn – Redshirt sophomore Gage Davis scored more than 30 points for the third straight game, but it was not enough as the St. Cloud State men's basketball team (18-12, 14-7 NSIC) lost a closely fought 104-97 overtime thriller to No. 21 MSU Moorhead (23-4, 18-3 NSIC) on Friday night, Feb. 17, at Halenbeck Hall.
Davis scored 35 points and also pulled down 10 rebounds to go along with seven assists and two blocks to lead the charge for SCSU. It was Davis' 13th double-double of the season and the third time in as many games that he has scored more than 34 points. He shot 13-for-22 from the field, knocked down four threes and hit 5-of-7 free throws. Junior Jon Averkamp totaled 27 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Averkamp shot 11-for-15 from the field. Senior Scottie Stone recorded 15 points and eight rebounds. Fellow senior Mark Hall recorded 11 points and five assists plus two blocks. Freshman Trevon Marshall totaled five assists. Junior Andy Foley had six points, five rebounds and five assists.
The Dragons put five players in double figures led by Matt Anderson's 22 points off the bench. Tanner Kretchman recorded 21 points and 10 assists. Ayob Ayob picked up 17 points and seven rebounds. Jon Doss had 14 points.
MSU Moorhead shot 52.2 percent from the field (36-for-69) and 78.8 percent from the free throw line (22-for-28). The Huskies shot 50 percent from the field (37-for-74), 39.4 percent from three-point range (13-for-33) and 76.4 percent from the free throw line (10-for-13). SCSU held a slight 37 to 35 edge in rebounding, but were outscored 46 to 28 in points in the paint. The game featured nine tied scores and nine lead changes.
The Huskies held a 40-35 lead at halftime, but found themselves down five, 86-81, with just over a minute to go in the contest (1:09) after an Anderson made layup. Averkamp then hit a layup and the ensuing free throw after getting fouled on the play to get the deficit down to two points, 86-84. After a defensive stop, Davis was fouled while attempting a three with just three seconds remaining in regulation. Davis hit two of the three attempt to tie the game up and send it to the extra session.
The Huskies took a one-point lead as Stone hit a three with 2:44 remaining in overtime. That would be the last lead that SCSU would have though as Anderson hit three straight layups put the Dragons up five. Davis brought St. Cloud State back to within two after slicing through the lane for a driving layup while getting fouled. He hit the free throw as well to allow SCSU to climb back to within two, 96-94, with exactly a minute remaining in the game. Aaron Lien was then fouled and hit both his free throws to put the lead back to four points, 98-94, with :34 seconds remaining. After a missed three pinter by SCSU, Lien was fouled again and knocked down both of his free throws. Another missed three by the Huskies resulted in Anderson getting fouled and hitting both his free throws. Hall brought the Huskies back to within five with :11 seconds remaining on a made three before Johnny Beeninga hit his two free throw attempts to put the final score at 104-97.
Next the program closes out the 2017 regular season and welcomes in Northern State on Saturday evening, Feb. 18, at 6 p.m. The game against NSU will also be Senior Day for SCSU's Scottie Stone, Mark Hall, Nebojsa Stanojevic and Seth Mortag.
