Men’s Basketball Comeback Falls Short in 75-64 Loss to Northern State

ST. CLOUD, Minn –The St. Cloud State men's basketball team (18-13, 14-8 NSIC) trailed at the half by 21 points and fought all the way back to get to within four in the last 10 minutes before falling 75-64 to Northern State (21-7, 17-5 NSIC) on Saturday evening, Feb. 18, at Halenbeck Hall in the final regular season contest of the season on Senior Night.
The Huskies were led by junior Andy Foley's first career double-double. Foley led the team in both scoring with 18 points and rebounding with 11 boards in the loss. Redshirt sophomore Gage Davis contributed 14 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals. Senior Scottie Stone totaled 13 points, four rebounds and three assists. Fellow senior Mark Hall recorded 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Jon Averkamp picked up eight points, three rebounds and two blocks.
The Wolves had five players in double figures with Mack Arvidson scoring 13 points with six rebounds. Carter Evans picked up 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists. DJ Pollard had 11 points and five rebounds. Justin Decker and Johnny Dahl both tallied 10 points.
Northern State shot 50.9 percent from the field (28-for-55), 35.3 percent from three-point range (35.3) and 72.2 percent from the free throw line (13-for-18). St Cloud State shot 36.2 percent from the field (25-for-69), 26.1 percent from three-point range (6-for-23) and 88.9 percent from the free throw line (8-for-9). The Huskies did force 18 turnovers including 12 in the second half when the team full court pressed effectively to aid in climbing back into the game after facing a sizable halftime deficit. NSU outrebounded SCSU 46 to 30 and outscored the program 42 to 28 in the paint. The game only featured one tied score and one lead change.
After being outscored 38 to 17 in the first half, the Huskies started the second half on a 26 to 10 run to get to within four points, 47-43, on a Stone made layup with 9:37 remaining in the contest. NSU followed with a 10-4 run to bring the lead back out to double digits, 57-47, on the second of two made free throws from Logan Doyle. The Huskies had one more run in the them and climbed back to within five, 67-62, on a three from Foley. That was as close as SCSU could get though as the program fell by a final margin of 75-64.
Next the program hosts the first round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Men's Basketball Tournament against Wayne State on Wednesday, Feb. 22, beginning at 7 p.m.
