#18 St. Cloud State edged by #1 Denver on Feb. 25

The #18 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (15-16-1, 9-12-1 NCHC) lost a 7-2 decision at #1 University of Denver (24-6-4, 16-3-3 NCHC) on Saturday, Feb. 25 at Magness Arena in Denver, Colo.
The Pioneers dominated the contest from the first period on as they owned a 2-0 lead after the first 20:00 thanks to goals by Liam Finlay and Matt Marcinew.
In the second period, Denver moved to a 3-0 lead with a goal by Henrik Borgstrom at 4:38. The Huskies broke the shutout at 9:20 of the second period with a power play marker by Mikey Eyssimont. He was assisted on his team-leading 14th goal of the season by Robby Jackson and Niklas Nevalainen.
The rally was quickly ended as Denver scored at 12:41 of the second with another goal by Finlay, which made the tally 4-1. The Pioneers stretched their lead to 5-1 at 13:04 of the second with a goal by Emil Romig and they completed the second period with Finlay's third goal of the night at 18:17. His hat trick goal was assisted by Adam Plant and Dylan Gambrell.
In the third period, Colin Staub pushed DU's margin to 7-1 at 10:51 before SCSU's Blake Winiecki scored at 15:48 of the third to make it 7-2. Winiecki's goal was assisted by Jack Poehling and Jack Ahcan. The score was Winiecki's 12th goal of the season and it was Ahcan's 15th assist of the year.
On the night, DU outshot the Huskies 32-29. SCSU was 1-3 on the power play and a perfect 2-2 on the penalty kill. In the nets, Jeff Smith was the goalie of record with four goals allowed, 13 saves in 32:41 minutes of play. Zach Driscoll had 12 saves and three goals allowed in the final 26:56 minutes of play. Tanner Jaillet won the game for DU in the nets with 17 saves in 40:00 of play, while Evan Cowley finished the game with 10 saves and one goal allowed.
