Men’s Basketball Falls to Minnesota State 79-62

Mankato, Minn. – Despite getting 26 points and 10 rebounds from redshirt sophomore Gage Davis, the St. Cloud State men's basketball team (17-10, 13-5 NSIC) fell on the road to Minnesota State (17-7, 12-6 NSIC) by a 79-62 score on Saturday evening, Feb. 4, at the Taylor Center.
Davis shot 11-for-19 from the field and knocked down four threes in scoring his 26 points. The double-double was his 10th of the season and 20th of his career. He also had three assists and a pair of steals. Junior Jon Averkamp totaled 16 points and five rebounds. Senior Scottie Stone chipped in with 11, but was only 4-for-17 from the field and 2-for-11 from three-point range. Senior Mark Hall led the team with his five assists. Minnesota State put three players in double figures with Jon Fuqua scoring 25 points and picked up eight rebounds. Aarias Austin has 16 points and nine rebounds. Charlie Brown totaled 11 points off the bench. Joey Witthus hauled in 10 rebounds to go along with his eight points.
The Huskies were outshot by a 49.2 percent (29-for-59) to 36.2 margin (25-for-69). Neither team shot well from three-point range, but SCSU held a slight 29.2 percent (7-for-24) to 23.8 advantage (5-for-21). Minnesota State did hit 16 free throws in 19 attempts, while SCSU was only sent to the line seven times and knocked down five. Minnesota State held a sizeable 46 to 33 advantage in rebounding and outscored St. Cloud State 36-18 in the paint plus had 11 second chance points and 21 points off the bench.
Minnesota State came out strong with SCSU only briefly holding a two-point lead in the first minute of the contest. MSU led 41-35 at the break and then outscored SCSU by a 38-27 score in the final 20 minutes to come away with the 79-62 victory.
The Huskies continue the road swing and travel to Bismarck, N.D. to take on the University of Mary on Friday, Feb. 10, beginning at 8 p.m. The program then takes on Minot State on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 6 p.m.
