SCSU men's hockey edged in overtime at North Dakota, 2-1

St. Cloud State University men's hockey (13-14-1, 7-10-1 NCHC) lost a hard fought 2-1 game in overtime at #12/13 North Dakota (15-11-3, 8-9-1 NCHC) on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D.
The game was finalized in the extra session with a goal by Mike Gornall at :41 of the overtime period. Gornall's goal was assisted by Rhett Gardner.
The goal ended another classic defensive battle in the NCHC as the Fighting Hawks outshot the Huskies 26-21 in the game. Huskies' netminder Jeff Smith was solid in goal with 24 saves and only one goal allowed in regulation for the second consecutive night. In his last four games, Smith has given up only five goals.
In the first period, SCSU gained a 1-0 lead with a power play goal by Mikey Eyssimont at 11:25. Assists on the play were tallied by Jacob Benson and Jack Ahcan. This was Eyssimont's 11th goal of the year for the Huskies.
North Dakota broke the shutout in the second period with a goal by Mike Gornall at 14:10. Assists on the play were added by Shane Gersich and Brock Boeser.
Cam Johnson was the goalie of record for UND with 20 saves in the game. SCSU was 1-of-5 on the power play and the Huskies were a perfect 1-of-1 on the penalty kill.
The Huskies will continue their 2016-17 season on Feb. 10-11 with a pair of home games against Miami University. The game on Feb. 10 has been designated as Military Appreciation Night. All active military and veterans will be admitted to the game for free along with a guest. Fans should call the SCSU Athletic Ticket office for details on this offer.
The game will also feature a salute to the conference champion 1986-87 squad that also placed third at the NCAA Division III tournament under the leadership of head coach Herb Brooks. This game will be televised live on the CBS Sports Network.
The weekend will wrap up on Feb. 11 with a 7:07 p.m. game against Miami at the HBNHC. The first 500 fans coming to the game will receive a free SCSU Zubaz stocking cap.
