SCSU Men's Hockey to host Miami on Feb. 10-11

The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (13-14-1, 7-10-1 NCHC) will return to action in the NCHC this weekend with a pair of dates at home against Miami University (9-11-6, 5-7-4 NCHC) on Feb. 10-11. The games will be played at St. Cloud State's Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (200x100) in St. Cloud, Minn. The game on Feb. 10 will begin at 7:37 p.m. (CT) and the game on Feb. 11 will begin at 7:07 p.m.

UPCOMING EVENTS AT THE HBNHC: The SCSU men's hockey game on Feb. 10 has been designated as SCSU men's hockey alumni night. All former SCSU hockey players are invited to come out for this special evening at the HBNHC, which will include a salute to NCHA championship team from 1986-87 that was coached by Herb Brooks.Â
• The game on Feb. 10 has also been designated as Military and Veteran Appreciation Night at SCSU Hockey. All active military and veterans will be admitted free to the game that night along with a guest.  Please call the hockey office at 320-308-4806 for more details.
 • On Feb. 11, the SCSU game will be Zubaz hat give-away night. The first 500 fans into the game will receive a free SCSU stocking cap courtesy of Zubaz. In addition, the always popular $1 hot dogs will be once again offered for this game at the HBNHC.

AT UND: The Huskies continued their stretch of playing nationally ranked teams with a weekend split at #12/13 North Dakota. On Feb. 3, SCSU posted a 3-1 win over the Fighting Hawks and on Feb. 4, SCSU lost a close 2-1 OT decision. In the win on Friday, SCSU's Jacob Benson scored the game's first goal in the first period, followed by the second game winner by Jimmy Schuldt. In the third period, Ryan Poehling added an insurance goal to make the final 3-1. Jeff Smith made 28 saves in the game as UND outshot the Huskies 29-20...on Feb. 4, SCSU suffered a tough 2-1 overtime setback. Mikey Eyssimont scored a first period PPG to make it 1-0 before the game settled into a defensive battle. UND scored in the second period to make it 1-1 before adding the GWG in the OT session. Smith had 24 saves in the game for SCSU.

TGIF: SCSU has enjoyed their Friday nights over the past few weeks. The Huskies have now won on four consecutive Friday nights dating back to a 2-1 victory at UMD on Jan. 13. The run includes a 3-2 OT win over Denver on Jan. 20, a 2-1 win over Bemidji State on Jan. 27 and a 3-1 win at UND on Feb. 3. SCSU is now 8-6-0 in games played on Friday nights this season. In contrast, SCSU has lost games on the last four Saturday nights.
MILESTONE APPROACHING: A pair of wins this weekend for the Huskies would give SCSU head coach Bob Motzko his 250th career win with the Huskies. He ranks second in the team history for most career wins behind Craig Dahl, who had 338 wins from 1987-2005. Motzko has been with the Huskies since the 2005-06 season.
TOUGH SCHEDULE: Over the last eight games, the Huskies have played the nation's best. This runs includes games against #1 UMD, #2 Denver, #14 North Dakota and RV Bemidji State. SCSU is 4-4-0 in these games. SCSU's strength of schedule is the ranked second best in the nation this week and the Huskies were ranked #16 in the Pairwise on Feb. 8 at 9:37 p.m.
LAST EIGHT:- SCSU has been stellar on defense over the last eight games. The Huskies have allowed only 16 goals over the stretch and this includes a 1.95 GAA and a .937 save rate.
THE NOTEBOOK: SCSU goalie Jeff Smith has started the last 13 games for the Huskies. He owns a 7-8-0 record this season with a 2.55 GAA and a .912 save rate...SCSU leads all NCAA DI teams for fewest penalty minutes per game at 8.9 PIM in 2016-17. The Huskies equalled a team best for fewest penalty minutes with one penalty for two minutes on Feb. 4 at UND...Mikey Eyssimont scored a goal on Feb. 4, which moved him back into a tie for the team's goal scoring lead with Blake Wineicki at 11 apiece this winter...Patrick Newell had two assists in the win over UND on Feb. 3, and he continues to pace SCSU this year with 18 helpers...Eyssimont (24), Winiecki (22) and Newell (21) lead SCSU's point race this season...Newell leads SCSU on the plus/minus at +6.
MIAMI NOTES: RedHawk coach Enrico Blasi played college hockey at Miami - at the same time that current SCSU coach Bob Motzko was an associate head coach at Miami in the 1990s...Blasi is in his 18th year as head coach at MU...Patrick Newell has three goals and two assists insix games played against Miami during his college career...Anthony Louis, a draftee of Chicago, leads Miami this season with 13 goals, 18 assists and 31 points..rookie goalie Ryan Larkin owns a 2.53 GAA and a .916 save rate. His record is 8-9-6 in 2016-17...earlier this season, SCSU lost a weekend series at Miami on Jan. 6-7 by scores of 3-2 and 4-1 in Oxford...last year at Miami, SCSU split with a 5-1 win and a 3-2 loss...the last time this series visited the HBNHC, the Huskies posted a 3-1 and 3-0 series sweep on Oct. 30-31, 2015...SCSU is 2-3-0 in the last five outings against Miami and 5-5-0 in the last 10 outings.
