Former Huskies net minder’s rookie season nets her league’s top goaltender honor
ST. CLOUD—After taking the league by storm in her rookie season, former St. Cloud State women's hockey goaltender Katie Fitzgerald was named the National Women's Hockey League's (NWHL) Best Goaltender, as voted by the media, the league announced Tuesday.
Fitzgerald, the first SCSU alum to suit up in the NWHL, played a league-high 15 games for the New York Riveters, notched two shutouts and boasted a 3.01 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage—both of which ranked third among league net minders.
She was dubbed "Brick Wall Fitzy" by New York's social media team and backstopped the Riveters to a second place league finish with a 7-6-1 record between the pipes.
"Katie has been great for us all season," New York assistant coach Sis Paulsen told NWHL.zone. "I'd seen her play at St. Cloud State and knew what she was capable of…Katie has always had a strong work ethic. Now her confidence is high."
Fitzgerald signed a contract with the Riveters in August after a four-year career with the Huskies. In 78 career games at St. Cloud State, the Des Plaines, Ill., native won 19 games and posted four shutouts, a 3.06 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage. The latter two figures rank third and fourth, all-time, in program history.
"To all of us here in St. Cloud, it is no surprise to see Katie receive this award," SCSU head coach Eric Rud said. "She is a dedicated athlete with terrific talent. We are very proud of her accomplishments and wish her continued success."
Her Husky career culminated in a standout 2015-16 senior season in which she registered career highs in games played (34), wins (12) and goals-against average (2.99) along with a .906 save percentage.
Fitzgerald and the No. 2-seeded Riveters will host the No. 3 Buffalo Beauts on Friday, March 17 at 7:30 p.m. ET in the Isobel Cup semifinals. The final will take place Sunday, March 19 at 6 p.m. ET in Lowell, Mass.
