Volleyball Travels to Michigan for Keweenaw Classic

St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State volleyball team (5-0) is back in action and travels to Houghton, Mich. this weekend for the Keweenaw Classic from Sept. 8-9. The tournament will be held on multiple courts on the Michigan Tech campus with SCSU playing four matches over the of course of the two days

This Week
- The program starts the tournament against Wisconsin Parkside (1-3) on Friday, Sept. 8, at 1:30 p.m. at the Multi Purpose Room.The Rangers started the season last weekend at the Warrior Invitational hosted by Wayne State University. Wisconsin Parkside defeated Ohio Dominican on Saturday, Sept. 2. Leah Fenske and Rachel Hedman combined for 29 kills in the victory. Katie Adams totaled 36 assists while Annie Leo accumulating 21 digs. SCSU is 2-4 all-time against Wisconsin Parkside.
 - SCSU takes on the host institution, Michigan Tech (2-2), in the evening match on Sept. 8 at the SDC Gym at 7:30 p.m. The Huskies defeated Indianapolis and Glenville State last weekend at the Hillsdale Tournament. MacAuley Peterson leads the team with her 43 kills. Elle Heinonen is the club leader with 69 digs. Laura DeMarchi has handed out 136 assists this season. SCSU is 11-5 all-time against Michigan Tech
 - SCSU continues the tournament the following day, Sept. 9, with matches against Northern Michigan (3-1) at 1 p.m. and Lake Superior State (1-1) at 5 p.m. at SDC Gym.Northern Michigan has been led in the early going by Kayla Chosa, who has 45 kills. Jami Hogeboom has dished out 135 assists. Jamie Muss is the club leader with her 57 digs. St. Cloud State is only 8-15 all-time against Northern Michigan.
 - Lake Superior State began its season by splitting matches against St. Xavier University and Trinity International. The program defeated Trinity International by a 3-1 count. Amanda Reid led the team against the Trojans with 15 kills and eight service aces. Caitlyn Kane had four blocks. Paige Gotham picked up 26 digs. St. Cloud State is 11-1 all-time against the Lakers

- St. Cloud State has raced out to 5-0 record and remain unblemished as they have yet to even drop a set in the first five matches and 15 sets.
- The perfect start to the season is the best for the program since when the 1985 team won its first 11 matches to start the campaign.
- Following the 2017 Cougar Classic, St. Cloud State saw four players honored with selections to the All-Tournament Team in senior Becca Gruber, senior Nicole Miller, junior Krista Kuglin and sophomore Clara Krenz.
- After the first week of volleyball action, St. Cloud State has several players that rank highly in the NSIC rankings. Nicole Miller is fifth in service aces (7) and eighth in kills per set (3.40). She is also 16th in digs (3.67). Krenz places fourth in digs per set (5.47) and 17th in service aces (6). Marah Mulso ranks sixth in blocks (1.25). Kayla Crane is ninth in service aces (7) and 15th in assists (6.13). Gruber is ninth in hitting percentage (.363) and 17th in kills per set (3.20).
- Nicole Miller has led the team in kills in four of the first five matches and has produced two double-doubles.
- She leads the team in kills (51), kills per match (3.40) and service aces (8).
- Miller is placed second on the squad in digs.
- Krenz leads the team with her 82 digs (5.47 per set)
- Crane has handed out a team-leading 92 assists.
- Mulso leads the squad with her 15 blocks.
- In the NSIC team rankings, SCSU is tops in service aces (320, second in opponent hitting percentage against (.112), fifth in kills (14.40) and digs per set (17.70), seventh in assists (12.60) and eighth in hitting percentage (.229).
- St. Cloud State returns home and open NSIC league play against Bemidji State on Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. at Halenbeck Hall. The program is 41-56 all-time against the Beavers in a series that started in 1973.
- The program then hits the road and takes on Minnesota Crookston on Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. and Minnesota Duluth on Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. SCSU is 14-8 all-time against the Golden Eagles since the first match in 1999 and 37-75 against Minnesota Duluth since the two schools first squared off in 1969
