Men’s Basketball Earns 69-55 Victory over MSU Moorhead

St. Cloud, Minn. – Senior Jon Averkamp scored a game-high 19 points to help lead the St. Cloud State men's basketball team (13-6, 9-4 NSIC) to a 69-55 victory over MSU Moorhead (5-15, 3-11 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 20, at Halenbeck Hall.
Averkamp shot 9-for-12 from the field plus had six rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal. Junior Gage Davis picked up his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Sean Smith chipped in with 15 points, nine rebounds, two blocks and eight assists. Junior Brindley Theisen totaled eight points and two steals. Junior Adam Heede-Andersen tallied eight points, three assists and three steals. Sophomore Trevon Marshall had four assists off the bench. Freshman Tristen Hull scored four points. Senior Andy Foley recorded four rebounds and two assists.
MSU Moorhead had a pair of players reach double figures in the game with Travaun Coad recording 13 points and seven rebounds. Johnny Beeninga had 12 points and four assists.
The Huskies shot 50 percent from the field (31-for-62), 31.6 percent from three-point range (6-for-19) and 33.3 percent from the free throw line (1-for-3). The team also had 33 rebounds, 21 assists, six blocks and six steals. The team also only turned the ball over five times in the contest. The Huskies also held a 42-18 advantage in points in the paint and 18-2 in second chance points. MSU Moorhead shot 41.3 percent from the field (19-for-46), 46.2 percent from three-point range (6-for-13) and 84.6 percent from the line (11-for-13).
The Huskies led 36-27 at the half and were able to keep control throughout in a game that featured five tied scores, but no lead changes. The team's largest lead was 16, 60-44, with 8:07 remaining in the game on the made three from Theisen. The Dragons fought back to get the lead down to eight points, 60-52 on the made three from Beeninga with 5:35 remaining in the game, but SCSU outscored MSUM 9-3 to close things out down the stretch
St. Cloud State men's basketball team gets back on the road and travels to Wayne State College on Friday, Jan. 26, for an 8 p.m. contest and Augustana on Saturday, Jan. 27, for a 6 p.m. game next weekend
