Men’s Basketball Off To Wayne State College and Augustana This Weekend

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The St. Cloud State men's basketball team (13-6, 9-4 NSIC) gets back in action this weekend with an NSIC road trip. The program takes on Wayne State College (11-11, 6-8 NSIC) on Friday, Jan. 26, at 8 p.m. at Rice Auditorium in Wayne, Nebraska and continues the road trip against Augustana (12-8, 7-7 NSIC) on Saturday, Jan. 27, at 6 p.m. at Sioux Falls Arena in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Scouting Wayne State College

Wayne State College split the team's two home games last weekend against Winona State (W, 69-67) on Jan. 19 and against Upper Iowa (L, 84-76) on Jan. 20.
The program has lost four of the last five games.
The Wildcats are 8-4 in home contests this season.
Kendall Jacks leads the team with his average of 14 points and 2.2 assists per contest.
Jacks is shooting 50.8 percent from the field, 39.3 percent from three-point range and 79.7 percent from the free throw line.
Trevin Joseph is second on the team in scoring at 12 points per game and leads the squad with his 31 steals despite coming off the bench for all 22 games.
Joseph is shooting 46.7 percent from the field, 36.4 percent from three-point range and 66.7 percent from the free throw line.
Vance Janssen is averaging 9.6 points per game and is second on the team in assists (43) and steals (30).
Jordan Cornelius leads the team in rebounds (99) and is averaging 8.1 points per game.
The team is averaging 75.6 points per game, while shooting 47.3 percent from the field, 37 percent from three-point range and 72.1 percent from the free throw line.
Wayne State is coached by Jeff Kaminsky, who is in his second season with the program and 31st season as a collegiate head coach.

Scouting Augustana

Augustana split the team's two games over the weekend with an 86-69 victory over Upper Iowa on Jan. 19 and an 84-80 defeat at the hands of Winona State on Jan. 20.
The program has been led by Jordan Spencer, who is averaging 16.6 points per game.
He is shooting 44.2 percent from the field, 41.7 percent from three-point range and 88.2 percent from the free throw line.
Spencer also leads the team with his 158 assists (7.9 per game).
John Warren is averaging 13.9 points per game, while shooting 45.8 percent from the field, 36.5 percent from three-point range and 81.8 percent from the foul line.
He also leads the team with 32 steals.
Steven Schaefer puts up 13.2 points per game.
Schaefer is shooting 52.8 percent from the field, 50 percent from three-point range and 80.8 percent from the free throw line.
Marcus Asmus gets 11.2 points per game and leads the team with his 153 rebounds (7.7 per game).
Adam Dykman averages 10.2 points per game, while shooting 50.8 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from three-point range.
The Vikings are averaging 84.1 points per game, while shooting 47.3 percent from the field and 76.9 percent from the free throw line.
The program has scored 80 or more points in 11 games this season with a high of 114 against the University of Mary.
The team is coached by Tom Billeter, who is in his eighth season with the program and 20th season as a collegiate head coach.

Foley had five points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Notables

St. Cloud State had a big weekend with a pair of home victories over No. 8 Northern State (76-61) on Jan. 19 and MSU Moorhead (69-55) on Jan. 20.
The program has now won 11 of the last 15 games.
Senior Jon Averkamp helped lead the team to the win over Northern State to stop their 18-game winning streak with a game-high 18 points on 7-for-8 shooting from the field.
He also had five rebounds and two steals.
Junior Gage Davis totaled 16 points, six rebounds, three blocks and a season-high nine assists.
Junior Sean Smith reached double figures with 15 points and six rebounds.
Junior Adam Heede-Andersen recorded nine points, three assists and two steals.
Senior Andy Foley chipped in with seven points, three rebounds and two assists.
The program improved to 29-14 all-time against the Wolves and end the previous two-game losing streak to them.
The Huskies shot 52 percent from the field in the game (26-for-50).
The team limited Northern State, who had been averaging nearly 80 points a game, to just 23 points in the first half – a new low for the SCSU defense in any half this season.
The Huskies kept the positive momentum going in the victory over MSU Moorhead.
The win over the Dragons ended the SCSU eight game losing streak to their conference rival and was the team's first win over MSUM since a home 75-67 win during the 2012-13 season.
SCSU improved to 82-45 all-time against MSU Moorhead.
Averkamp again led the team with his 19 points plus he had six rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal.
Smith recorded 15 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and two blocks.
Davis picked up his second double-double of the season and the 26th of his career with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Junior Brindley Theisen score eight points with two steals.
Heede-Andersen totaled eight points, three assists and three steals.
The program shot 50 percent from the field (31-for-62) against the Dragons
It was the 10th time on the campaign that SCSU shot 50 percent or better from the field (9-1 record).
The program won the battle of the boards in both games last week and are 12-2 when holding a rebounding edge and 1-4 when trailing in the battle of the boards.
SCSU is 13-3 this season when scoring 69 or more points and 3-6 when allowing 69 or more points.
Averkamp, a senior from Germantown, Wisconsin, was named the NSIC North Player of the Week on Monday, Jan. 22, after averaging 18.5 points per game in the team's victories over then No. 8 Northern State and MSU Moorhead.
On the week, Averkamp shot 80 percent from the field (16-for-20) and was perfect in shooting from both three-point range (2-for-2) and the free throw line (3-for-3).
He also picked up 11 rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks.
St. Cloud State ranks in the top half of the conference in assist-turnover ratio (1.63 – 1st), assists per game (16.8 – 2nd), blocked shots (4.2 – 3rd), fewest turnovers (196 – 3rd), field goal percentage (48.2 – 5th), field goal percentage defense (45.2 – 7th), offensive rebounds per game (10.21 – 3rd), rebounding margin (4.4 – 3rd), scoring defense (69.8 – 3rd), scoring margin (7.6 – 4th), steals per game (6.3 – 3rd), total assists (319 – 4th), total blocks (79 – 4th), total steals (120 – 6th), turnover margin (3.0 – 2nd),turnovers forced per game (13.32 – 3rd), turnovers per game (10.3 – 5th) and win-loss percentage (68.4 - 5th)
Averkamp is fourth in the NSIC in scoring at 20.3 points per game.
He is also fourth in field goal percentage (61.9) shooting (156-for-252), which is even more impressive since he has taken the eighth-most shots in the league through the first 10 weeks of the season.
Averkamp is second in the conference in offensive rebounding (2.53) and is 11th overall in rebounding (6.7).
He also leads the team and the league in three-point percentage (62.5).
Smith is second in the league in rebounds (8.7), blocked shots (2.37) and defensive rebounds per game (6.37)
He is fifth in offensive rebounds (2.37).
He has reached double figures in rebounds in seven games including five double-doubles.
Smith is also averaging in double figures on the season at 11.7 points per game.
His 45 blocks represent 57 percent of the team's blocked shots this season (45-of-79).
Theisen is fourth on the team with his average of 11.6 points per game.
He has scored in double figures in 12 of the 19 games
Theisen is sixth in the league in three-point field goals per game (2.21), fifth in three-point attempts (120) plus eighth in total three-pointers made (42).
Junior Adam Heede-Andersen is 11th in the league in assists per game (3.7), 11th in total assists (71) plus 10th in assists to turnover ratio (2.03).
He is also second on the team in steals (22).
Six players on the have played in all 19 games this season with three (Averkamp, Theisen and Smith) starting all of them.
