The #3/5 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (0-0-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) will kick off the 2018-19 regular season on Friday, Oct. 12 and Saturday, Oct. 13 with a pair of 7:07 pm AT
(10:07 p.m. CT) games at the University of Alaska (0-2-0, 0-0-0 WCHA) in Fairbanks, Alaska. The games will be played at the Carlson Center.

ST. CLOUD STATE MEN'S HOCKEY NEWS AND NOTES:
DAWN OF A NEW ERA: St. Cloud State University men's hockey opened the Brett Larson era on Sunday, Oct. 7 with a 6-2 exhibition victory over Mount Royal University at the HBNHC in St. Cloud, Minn. This marked Larson's debut on the SCSU bench as the team's head coach. Larson took over the helm of the SCSU program during the offseason and is the third head coach during the Huskies' NCAA Division I era since 1987-88.

BRETT LARSON SHOW AT THE GREEN MILL: Fans can attend the Brett Larson Show every Monday during the 2018-19 season at the Green Mill in downtown St. Cloud. Host Jim Erickson will run the show along with Coach Larson and special player guests each week. The Green Mill also offers a complete menu of tasty food and drink items. IN THE POLLS: The Huskies received a #3 ranking in the USA TODAY/USA Hockey weekly poll. In the USCHO.com poll this week, the Huskies earned a #5 ranking.
LEAGUE CHAMPS: SCSU clinched the NCHC regular season title with its four point weekend vs. Denver in 2017-18. This marks the second time in team history that SCSU has won the Penrose Cup (first was in 2013-14) and the third time SCSU has won a regular season league title during the DI era. SCSU also won
the WCHA regular season crown in 2012-13. As a DIII affiliate, SCSU won the NCHA league title in 1986-87.
NCAA NOTES: Last year marked the first time that the Huskies earned the top seed in the NCAA tournament... this was SCSU's 12th NCAA tournament bid ....The Huskies also gained NCAA bids in 1989, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.
GREAT START: Junior Nick Poehling scored two goals in the Huskies' victory over Mount Royal on Oct. 7. Ryan Poehling (two assists) and Blake Lizotte (one goal, one assist) also had multi-point nights for the Huskies vs. Mount Royal...This marked the first time in team history that the Huskies have played an exhibition game vs. Mount Royal...Postseason honors candidate Jimmy Schuldt carded the game winning goal vs. Mount Royal at 4:40 of the second period. A Hobey Baker Award top 10 finalist and 2018 AHCA All-America award winner, Schuldt is back for his third season as a team captain for the Huskies in 2018-19. He is the first SCSU player in the team's DI history to serve as a team captain for all three seasons.
MIKE RICHTER WATCH LIST: David Hrenak has been selected to the 2018-19 watch list for the Mike Richter Award tby Let's Play Hockey. The award is presented annually to the nation's top NCAA DI goaltender. He was selected to the All-NCHC Rookie Team and was named an All-NCHC Honorable Mention pick in 2018. The award is presented by Let's Play Hockey and the Herb Brooks Foundation. Hrenak was a draft pick of the Los Angeles Kings during the summer of 2018. SCSU's other NHL draft pick this summer was Sam Hentges (Minnesota Wild), while Ryan Poehling (Montreal) and Nick Perbix (Tampa Bay) were both selected in 2017.
NANOOK NOTES: The Huskies will open the 2018-19 regular season with a road trip to Alaska on Oct. 12-13. Last year, SCSU posted a 6-3 and 5-4 OT sweep vs. the Nanooks at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center...SCSU is 8-3-0 in the all-time series against Alaska at the DI level (and 9-6-0 in the series overall)...The first time these two squads played, the Huskies posted an 11-1 win in 1980-81...The last time SCSU played in Fairbanks, the Huskies split a weekend series by scores of 4-2 on Oct. 28-29, 1988...The last time SCSU played UAF in the state of Alaska, the Huskies gained a 3-0 win on Oct. 9, 2015 at the Nye Frontier Classic in Anchorage, Alaska.
HOMECOMING 2018: SCSU will be back home at the Oct. 19-20 for a pair of non-conference tilts on Homecoming weekend against Northern Michigan. LEADERS: Robby Jackson led SCSU with 42 points last season, while Jimmy Schuldt led the team with 28 assists. Schuldt now ranks seventh in the team records for most career points by a blueliner. His career totals include 28g/55a and 83 points. Kelly Hultgren leads the all-time defensive list with 107 points from 1991-95. Of note, Schuldt is tied for 7th on the list with Garrett Raboin who also had 83 points from 2006-10.
TOPS IN THE NCHC: The Huskies were the regular season champs in the NCHC. In NCHC games played last season, SCSU led the league with 93 goals scored, while WMU ranked 2nd with 82 goals. David Hrenak led all SCSU goalies with a .929 save rate and was second with a 1.94 GAA...Easton Brodzinski ranked second in the league among NCHC Rookies with 18 points (.78 ppg) and Schuldt was second in the NCHC for Defenseman Scoring with 23 points (.96 ppg)...Brodzinski led the NCHC this year with 4 GWG and Robby Jackson was tops in the league with three SHGs in 2017-18... for assists, Schuldt ranked second in the league with 20 helpers (.83 apg) in 2017-18, while Mikey Eyssimont and Robby Jackson ranked 6th in the league with 11 goals scored (.46 gpg). Jackson ranked fifth in the NCHC files this year with 27 points (1.12 ppg) and Eyssimont was ranked sixth with 26 points (1.08 ppg)
SCSU NOTES: According to Nate Ewell from College Hockey, Inc., the Huskies rank second in NCAA DI hockey for most returning goals from 2017-18 with 108 goals. Penn State is the top team with 109 returning goals from 2017-18. The Huskies rank first in the nation for most returning points with 303, while Boston College ranks second iwth 289 points...SCSU brings back eight of its top 10 point producers from 2017-18...SCSU also features nine seniors on its roster and five juniors on its 2018-19 roster...Jimmy Schuldt needs 17 points to join the Huskies 100-point Club, while Robby Jackson needs 19 more points to hit the century mark at SCSU...Jon Lizotte led the Huskies on the plus/minus last year with a +20. He also paced the Huskies' blueliners with 85 blocked shots and Jimmy Schuldt ranked second with 84 blocks...the Huskies outscored their opponents 144-101 last year...David Hrenak gained starts in the last 11 consecutive games of the 2017-18 season for the Huskies.
NOTE ON THE NANOOKS: St. Cloud State will resume their series with Alaska this weekend. The Huskies are 9-6-0 in the all-time series against Alaska, which started in 1980-81...SCSU leads the series during its DI era by an 8-3-0 margin...the last time that SCSU and Alaska have played each other last year at the HBNHC. SCSU won the games by scores 0f 6-3 and 5-4 in OT...the last time SCSU played Alaska in the the state of Alaska was at the Kendall Hockey Classic on Oct. 9, 2015 (SCSU won that game 3-0 in Anchorage)...prior to the DI era, UAF owned a 3-1 series lead over SCSU...Alaska is led by head coach Erik Largen, who begins his first year at UAF in 2018-19...Alaska is 0-2-0 this season and opened its year with a 3-0 and 5-0 loss at Arizona State on Oct. 6-7. UAF opened the year with a 13-1 exhibition win over Simon Fraser on Sept. 29 in Fairbanks...Sophomore forward Steve Jandric led UAF with 4g/19a and 23 points last year...goalie Anton Martinsson posted a 3.17 GAA and a 10-18-3 record last year for the Nanooks...Minnesota based players on the UAF roster this year include Jack Weiss (Bloomington), Chase Ellingson (Blaine), Tyler Clines (Blaine).
