#4 Huskies score 4-1 victory over NMU to open Homecoming Weekend

The #4 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (3-0-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) remained undefeated in the new season thanks to a solid 4-1 victory over Northern Michigan University (1-2-0, 0-0-0 WCHA) on Friday, Oct. 19. The game opened the Homecoming 2018 weekend series against the Wildcats, which will be completed by a 6:07 p.m. start at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Saturday, Oct. 20.

In a game dominated by the Huskies from the opening bell, SCSU charged to a 1-0 lead in the first period with a goal by Jake Wahlin at 8:38. Jon Lizotte and Nolan Walker each posted assists on the play, which was Wahlin's first goal of the season.
In the second period, Easton Brodzinski broke into the scoring column for the first time this season with a goal at 2:25. His even strength marker was assisted by Jack Ahcan and Robby Jackson. This was Ahcan's team-leading sixth assist of the season for the Huskies and the goal proved to be the game winner for the Huskies.
At 8:05 of the second period, junior forward Ryan Poehling also scored his first goal of the 2018-19 campaign with a power play marker. Brodzinski and Blake Lizotte each had assists on the goal for Ryan Poehling.
With the Huskies killing a five minute major, NMU finally broke the shutout with a PPG by Griffin Loughran. He was assisted by Ryan Black and Mitchel Slattery on the play. To ice the contest, SCSU's Sam Hentges scored his first collegiate goal at 10:59 of the third period with helpers from Blake Lizotte and Patrick Newell. Of note, Newell (3g/3a) and Ahcan (6a) both lead the Huskies with six points apiece this season.
In the contest, SCSU outshot the Wildcats 33-21. SCSU was 1-of-5 on the power play and NMU was 1-of-6. David Hrenak was the goalie of record for SCSU with 20 saves, while Atte Tolvanen had 29 saves in the loss for NMU.
The Huskies will complete the weekend series on Oct. 20 with a 6:07 p.m. game against NMU at the HBNHC. Fans can listen to the game on The River 96.7 FM or KVSC FM 88.1.
