#4/6 St. Cloud State men's hockey opens season with 6-2 win over Mt. Royal

The #4/6 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (0-0-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) opened its 2018-19 season with a 6-2 victory against Mount Royal University in an exhibition game played at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. on Sunday, Oct. 7.
The Huskies dominated the contest throughout as they outshot the Cougars 40-17 in the match. Jacob Benson opend the attack for the Huskies with a power play goal at 4:09 of the first period with assists from rookies Nolan Walker and Nick Perbix.
SCSU pushed its lead to 2-0 with a goal by Nick Poehling at 13:59 of the first with assists from Kevin Fitzgerald and Spencer Meier. In the second period, SCSU extended its lead to 3-0 with the eventual game winner posted by senior captain Jimmy Schuldt at 4:40. Ryan Poehling and Easton Brodzinski each had assists on the play that made the score 3-0.
Mount Royal broke the shutout in the second with a goal by Zack Henry at 10:17, before the Huskies returned to the scoring column at 17:01 of the second with a goal by Jack Ahcan. Patrick Newell and and Blake Lizotte each had assists on the play for the Huskies.
In the final period, Lizotte pushed SCSU's lead to 5-1 with a goal on the power play at 6:16 as assists were coined by Robby Jackson and Ryan Poehling. To complete the offense for the evening, SCSU's Nick Poehling posted his second goal of the night at 6:53 of the third with assists from Jack Poehling and freshman Brendan Bushy. Mount Royal finished the night with a goal by Ryley Lindgren at 13:00 to make the final tally 6-2.
In the nets, SCSU used all three of its goalies in the exhibition match. David Hrenka made three saves in the game, while Jeff Smith had nine saves in the second period and David Zevnik had three saves in the game for the Huskies. On the power play, SCSU was 2-3 and Mount Royal was 1-4.
SCSU will open its regular season on Friday, Oct. 12 with a non-conference tilt against Alaska in Fairbanks, Alaska. The Huskies will then complete the weekend up north on Saturday, Oct. 13 with another game against Alaska. Fans can listen to both games on The River 96.7 FM (Tune-In Radio)
