ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University men's basketball team made it no secret that it has one of the most high-powered offenses in the nation over the weekend. The Huskies scored an overage of 86 points against two of the top teams in the nation away from the comforts of Halenbeck Hall. Tuesday evening, St. Cloud State finally got to show off its offensive and defensive skills for its home fans in a dominant 121-81 victory over Division III's Crown College.
The Huskies led the game in nearly every single statistical category except free throw shooting, as they outshot, outrebounded, out blocked, out assisted, and out stole the Storm Tuesday evening. However, that doesn't mean things weren't interesting to start the game between No. 16/18 St. Cloud State and Crown. The game was tight through the first 20 minutes, as the Storm hung with the Huskies every step of the way. In fact, Crown was actually shooting better and more efficiently than St. Cloud State in the opening minutes, jumping out to an early 8-5 lead and extended it to 17-15 lead at 13:08 in the first half. Even when the Huskies did manage to tie things up and take a 25-19 lead of their own, the Storm hung around, never letting the lead get too far out of reach.
Once the St. Cloud State shooters got started, though, there was nothing Crown could go defensively, as the Huskies started to run away with the game midway through the first half. In fact, St. Cloud State outscored the Storm 18-0 in the final seven minutes of the first half, jumping ahead 48-25 before Crown managed to score again. Gage Davis (Bolingbrook, Ill. / Bolingbrook) jump started the run with a three-pointer from the top of the key, scoring the first of 18 consecutive points for the Huskies.
After some highly impressive displays of offensive, St. Cloud State closed the half with a jumper by Ethan Schuemer (Lombard, Ill. / Willowbrook), giving the team a 64-34 lead at the half. Unlike previous contests, the Huskies would not relinquish that lead in the second half of the ball 121-81 victory.
Offensively, St. Cloud State was on fire all evening, as the team shot an impressive .620 percent from the floor, converting 49-79 field goals on the night. The Huskies also shot .583 percent from three-point range, their best shooting percentage from beyond the arch this season, while tallying 26 assists, seven blocks and 51 rebounds as a team.
Davis was the top offensive player on the night, tallying 19 points and a team-leading seven rebounds in just 19 minutes of play. However, it was Adam Heede-Andersen (Copenhagen, Denmark, Stenhus Gymnasium) who stole the show. The senior guard scored a career-high 19 points against the Storm and tallied 10 assists for the first double-double of his career with St. Cloud State.
Jace Kitchen (Dekalb, Ill. / Dekalb), Schuemer and Diamond Onwuka (Barcelona, Spain / Howard College) also had career nights for the Huskies, tallying 15, 13 and 11 points respectively. Additionally, Brindley Theisen (St. Cloud, Minn. / St. Cloud Cathedral) and Trevon Marshall (Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) scored in double-digits with 14 and 12 points respectively. Theisen was 4-8 from beyond the arc shooting, while Marshall shot 6-9 from the floor.
With the victory, St. Cloud State's record improves to 3-0 for the first time in five year. The Huskies will look to keep their win streak alive when they host Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) foe Minnesota State-Mankato in a nonconference game at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
