The #1 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (11-1-1, 4-0-1 NCHC) extended its unbeaten streak to seven game by virtue of its 4-4 decision at Miami University (9-6-2, 3-3-1 NCHC) on Friday, Nov. 30 in Oxford, Ohio.
The game went into the books as a tie but the Huskies did manage to pick-up the extra NCHC point as they won the shootout with a goal by Blake Lizotte.
In a roller coaster ride of a hockey game, the Huskies opened the game's scoring in the first period with a marker by Robby Jackson at 1:08. Assists were added by Nolan Walker and Nick Prebix on the play. The goal came after the game officials had stopped play to review the play, which was then determined to be a goal.
Just nine seconds later, Miami tied the game at 1-1 with a goal by Scott Corbett at 1:17 of the first. The rapid fire first period continued as Jackson netted his second goal of the evening with a power play tally at 4:16 of the first. He was assisted on the play by Ryan Poehling and Jimmy Schuldt. This was Jackson's fifth goal of the season and his 96th career point. The assist was also Schuldt's 96th career point as a Husky and his ninth assist of the season.
The goal also provided Poehling with his team leading 11th assist of the year. He is tied for the team's assist lead this year along with Blake Lizotte.
The first period scoring show continued at 5:36 of the first with a shorthanded goal by Miami's Monte Graham. This was the first SHG allowed by the Huskies in 2018-19. SCSU regained the lead at 13:34 of the first period with a power play goal by Sam Hentges. He was assisted on the play by Nolan Walker and Patrick Newell. This play was Walker's 10th assist of the season.
To complete the first period scoring, Miami's Karch Bachman tied the game once again at 17:40 to make it 3-3.
In the second period, SCSU's Newell gave the Huskies a 4-3 lead with his goal at 18:58. Jon Lizotte charted the lone assist on the play, which was Newell's team leading ninth goal and 17th point of the year.
Miami's Casey Gilling forced the game's overtime sessions when he scored and unassisted goal at 12:54. Both teams played even through the end of regulation and skated through the overtime session with the score still tied at 4-4. The teams also went scoreless through the three-on-three overtime session, which forced the shootout to detemine the extra league point. Miami's Casey Gilling opened the shootout with a miss before Blake Lizotte ended the night with a goal on SCSU's first attempt.
In the game, SCSU hit a season, game-high with 44 shots on goal and Miami had 30 shots on target. Jeff Smith was the goalie of record with 26 saves and also added the save on Gilling in the shootout. On the power play, SCSU was two-of-three and the Huskies were also one-of-one on the penalty kill.
SCSU and Miami will finish the weekend on Saturday, Dec. 1 with a 6:05 p.m. CT game at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Fans can watch the game live on NCHC.tv/scsu and listen on The River 96.7 FM
