#3/4 St. Cloud State sweeps Redhawks with 4-0 win on Feb. 10

Oxford, Ohio - The #3/4 St. Cloud State men's hockey team (19-6-3, 13-4-1 NCHC) brought home another series sweep and took over possession of first place in the NCHC with a 4-0 victory at Miami University (10-15-3, 5-11-2 NCHC) on Saturday, Feb. 10.
The victory marked SCSU's first-ever sweep in Oxford and it also pushed the Huskies into the top spot in the current Pairwise rankings. SCSU has seven weekend sweeps to its credit this season and the Huskies will continue league play on the road next week with two key NCHC matches at Western Michigan on Feb. 16-17 in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The Huskies and Redhawks battled through a scoreless draw in the first period on Feb. 10 before Nick Poehling hit the game winner at 3:48 of the second period with assists from Judd Peterson and Jake Wahlin. This was Poehling's sixth goal of the season and it was Peterson's 11th assist of the year.
The contest shifted into a defensive mode once again as the two squads went scoreless until the midway mark of the third period when Patrick Newell tallied his first goal of the evening at 10:03 with assists to Blake Lizotte and Mikey Eyssimont.
In the closing minutes of play, Newell added his second goal of the night with an empty net goal at 16:08 that made the tally 3-0. His goal was unassisted and it was his fifth of the season. To cap the game, Peterson added another empty netter at 17:52 with a solo assist to Newell. This was Peterson's fifth goal of the year and it was Newell's 14th assist of 2017-18. Newell finished the evening with two goals, one assist and was +3.
Miami managed to outshoot the Huskies in the contest by a 30-21 margin. SCSU was a perfect 4-4 on the penalty kill and ended the weekend with a 7-7 effort on the PK against the highly ranked Redhawks. On the power play, SCSU was 0-5 on the evening.
In the nets, David Hrenak charted his third shutout of the season with 30 saves to his credit. His save total included a huge save on a penalty shot attempt in the third period by Carson Meyer. He is now 8-4-0 in 2017-18 for the Huskies.
