#2/3 St. Cloud State to face #15 Western Michigan on Feb. 16-17

The #2/3 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (19-6-3, 13-4-1 NCHC) will be on the road this weekend with a pair of NCHC contests at #15 Western Michigan University (14-13-1, 9-9-0 NCHC) on Friday, Feb. 16 and Saturday, Feb. 17. Both games will be played at the Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich. Both games will start at 7:05 p.m. ET/6:05 p.m. CT.

IN THE POLLS: The Huskies received a #2 ranking in the USA TODAY/USA Hockey Division I poll this week. SCSU also gained a #3 ranking in the USCHO.com poll this week...St. Cloud State was picked as the #2 team in the 2017-18 preseason NCHC poll. Of note, the Huskies received votes in the final USCHO.com poll of 2016-17. WMU is ranked #15 this week.

CONFERENCE RACE: The sweep in Miami moved St. Cloud State into first place in the NCHC. The Huskies now have 40 league points (13-4-1) in 18 games played. Denver ranks 2nd in the league with 18 points, while UND and WMU are tied for third place with 27 points...the wins also elevated SCSU into the top spot in the Pairwise ranking with 59 points. Denver is second at 58 and Notre Dame is third at 57.
OLYMPIC DREAMS: The USA men's hockey team will feature two SCSU Huskies at the Winter Olympic Games in 2018. Current SCSU blueliner Will Borgen has been selected to the team along with former Husky forward Garrett Roe. Borgen and Roe will join a list of 15 Huskies who have competed in the Olympics. Other former SCSU hockey players to play for Team USA include Bret Hedican (1992 and 2006), Ryan Malone (2010), Mark Parrish (2006), Matt Cullen (2006) and Andreas Nodl (2014). Of note, former Husky hockey player Rikard Gronberg will serve as head coach for Team Sweden at the 2018 Winter Games. Roe played for SCSU from 2007-11 and ranks first in the team records with 113 assists and third with 178 points (65g/113a). He is currently playing professional hockey in Switzerland this winter. Borgen has 2g/10a for the Huskies this season. Borgen departed for the games on Feb. 7...in the first game of the Olympics for Team USA, Roe netted an assist on a goal by Brian O'Neill in USA's 3-2 OT loss to Slovenia on Feb. 14.
THE WEEKEND UPDATE: The Huskies gained their seventh weekend sweep of the season with 5-2 and 4-0 victories at Miami on Feb. 9-10. This was SCSU's second consecutive weekend sweep and its first ever weekend sweep in Oxford, Ohio vs. Miami. On Feb. 9, SCSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period with markers by Robby Jackson, Blake Lizotte and Mikey Eyssimont. Miami rallied with a pair in the second before third period tallies by Kevin Fitzgerald and Jackson sealed the final at 5-2. Jeff Smith gained his 11th win of the campaign with 26 saves in the nets. On Feb. 10, SCSU added its sixth 4th shutout of the season with a 30 save effort by David Hrenak (his third shutout of 2017-18). The game winner was posted at 3:48 of the 2nd by Nick Poehling. Patrick Newell made it 2-0 in the third before a pair of ENG shorties by Newell and Judd Peterson completed the scoing at 4-0. Of note, SCSU was an imrpessive 8-of-8 on the penalty kill over the weekend.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: David Hrenak gained NCHC Rookie of the Week notice on Feb. 12 thanks to his 30 save shutout performance against Miami on Feb. 10. His save tally included a penalty shot save in the third period that maintained the perfect game.
GOALS GALORE: The Huskies have already surpassed their goal total from the 2016-17 season. Last year, SCSU scored 105 goals in 36 games played. In 28 games played in 2017-18, the Huskies have already scored 108 goals. SCSU currently ranks 2nd in the nation with a scoring average of 3.86 goals per game. The Huskies' current team record for goals per game in a season is 4.26 set in 2001-02 and 2015-16.
ONLY AT SCSU: St. Cloud State is the lone NCAA school in the nation with an active men's hockey player and an active women's hockey player playing hockey at the upcoming Winter Olympics. Will Borgen will play for Team USA and SCSU goalie Janine Alder will be joining the Swiss women's hockey team at the upcoming Winter Games.
GOALIE FACTS: David Hrenak currently ranks 4th in the team records with three shutouts this season. Scott Meyer set a team shutout record with 7 in 1999-00. Hrenak ranks 7th in the nation with a 1.95 GAA and 5th with a .928 save rate. Jeff Smith ranks 4th in the nation with a .781 winning percentage (.781).
GET SHORTY: Judd Peterson netted his fifth career SHG as a Husky on Feb. 10. He currently ranks 6th in the team records behind all-time career leader Dave Paradise with 9 from 1993-97.
TRENDING: LA Kings draftee Mikey Eyssimont brings a four-game point streak into the weekend at WMU. He ranks second on the team with 30 points and 12 goals this season. He has six points (3g/3a) to his credit over the last four games...Patrick Newell has been on fire as of late with 2g/3a over the last three games. He has been on the scoresheet in 6 of the last 7 games and has posted 8 points (2g/6a) during that stretch. On the season, Newell has improved to 5g/14a.
100 COUNTDOWN: Mikey Eyssimont continues his march toward the 100-point club. He added a goal and an assist on the trip to Miami and his career tally now stands at 40 goals, 53 assists and 93 points. A total of 29 Huskies are members of the 100-point club at SCSU (all points scored at the DI level).
OPPONENT NOTES: Western Michigan is led by fifth year head coach Andy Murray. A 10-year head coaching veteran in the NHL, Murray posted a 333-278-58-71 career record that included stints with the Los Angeles Kings (1999-2006) and the St. Louis Blues (2006-10). He also served as an assistant coach with Philadelphia, Minnesota (North Stars) and Winnipeg (Jets) during his pro coaching career..SCSU is 7-3-2 in the all-time series against WMU...SCSU is 3-1-1 in the last five outings against WMU and SCSU is 4-0-2 in play against WMU at the Lawson Arena in the series, which dates back to a 4-2 win in St. Cloud on Dec. 29, 2011...earlier this year, SCSU split a weekend series vs. WMU with a 7-5 loss on Jan. 12 and a 4-3 win on Jan. 13...the loss snapped an 8-game unbeaten streak against WMU and the Huskies are 8-1-1 in the last 10 games played against the Broncos...WMU is ranked #15 in the latest DI polls...SCSU has never lost a game played against WMU in Kalamazoo.
