
#1 St. Cloud State men's hockey on road trip to North Dakota

The #1 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (17-3-2, 9-1-2 NCHC) will be on the road this weekend with a pair of NCHC games at the University of North Dakota (12-10-1, 6-6-0 NCHC). On Friday, Jan. 25, the Huskies and Fighting Hawks will start play at 7:37 p.m. and on Saturday, Jan. 26, the game is slated to start at 7:07 p.m. Both games will be played at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D. IN THE POLLS:  The Huskies received a #1 ranking in the USA TODAY/USA Hockey weekly poll.  In the USCHO.com poll this week, the Huskies earned a #1 ranking. Â
LAST TIME OUT:  The Huskies collected their seventh weekend sweep of the season with 3-0 and 5-3 wins over Western Michigan on Jan. 18 and Jan. 19 respectively at the HBNHC.  On Jan. 18, David Hrenak made 23 saves to earn his third shutout of the season as SCSU goals were notched by Nick Poehling, Micah Miller and Jack Poehling in the game.  SCSU outshot the Broncos 37-23 in the game.  On Jan. 19, SCSU trailed 1-0 after the first period before the Huskies hit four unanswered goals to reel in the 5-3 win.  In the second period, SCSU goals were posted by Blake Lizotte, Easton Brodzinski (PPG), Micah Miller and Nolan Walker (GWG/PPG) to take a 4-1 lead.  SCSU added an ENG by Jack Poehling to finalize the SCSU scoring in the third.  Hrenak had 15 saves in the game as SCSU outshot the Broncos 37-18.  Hrenak is now 13-2-1 on the season.

CAREER FIRST:  SCSU freshman Micah Miller scored his first collegiate goal on Jan. 18 vs. WMU at 9:20 of the 2nd period.  He capped his weekend with his second career goal in the second period vs. WMU on Jan. 19.  On the season, Miller now has 2g/2a.
NEXT MILESTONE:  Senior defender and post-season honors candidate Jimmy Schuldt is moving closer to the team's record for most career points scored by a defenseman.  Schuldt currently has 102 career points (34g/68a).  The team's record is currently owned by Kelly Hultgren, who had 107 career points (28g/79a).  Schuldt already owns the team record for most career goals by a defenseman with 34.  He is also tied for the team record by a defenseman with 18 power play goals along with Justin Fletcher (2003-07).
PENALTY FREE:  Patrick Newell has played in all 22 games for the Huskies this season and has not been called for a penalty.  He was not called for a penalty during the entire 2017-18 season and only has been whistled for 4 penalites (8 minutes) during his career at SCSU.  His last penalty received was Dec. 2, 2016 at WMU.  He has played in 78 consecutive games with being called for a penalty.
FRESHMEN POWER:Â Â Sam Hentges will bring a team-leading four game point streak into the weekend series at UND, while Micah Miller ranks second on the team with a three game point streak.
THE POEHLING POSSE: The line of Jack Poehling-Ryan Poehling and Nick Poehling made a big impact last week vs. WMU.  The trio combined for three goals, six assists and nine points in the two games.  This was just the fourth time the three brothers skated on the same line this season.
NATIONAL LEADERS:Â Â Jack Ahcan ranks 13th among NCAA hockey players with 0.82 assists per game (18 in 22 games played this year) and Ryan Poehling ranks 17th at 0.80 assists per game...Patrick Newell and Easton Brodzinski both rank sixth in the nation with four GWGs apiece...Jack Ahcan ranks 13th in the nation for scoring by a defenseman at .91 points per game and Jimmy Schuldt ranks 19th at .86 ppg...Nolan Walker ranks 11th among DI rookies with .86 ppg...David Hrenak ranks 3rd in the country with a .844 winning percentage (13-2-1)...SCSU ranks 2nd among DI teams with a 3.91 goals per game average (86 goals) and seventh on defense at 2.09 goals allowed per game...on the power play, SCSU ranks seventh in the nation at 24.7% (21/85) and third on the penalty kill at 88.9% (64/72)...SCSU ranks first in the nation with an .818 winning percentage (17-3-2).
FYI: Jimmy Schuldt has played in 139 consecutive games at SCSU.  He will be playing in his 140th career game at SCSU on Friday at UND.

WORLD JUNIOR SPOTLIGHT: Forward Ryan Poehling helped Team USA gain a second place finish at the 2019 IIHF World Juniors.  Poehling was voted the MVP in the tournament, makde the tourney All-Star Team and was voted the Best Forward in the tournament.  He had five goals and three assists in tournament play (3rd best).  Poehling competed for Team USA at the World Juniors in 2018, where Team USA won a Bronze Medal.  Poehling joined Mark Parrish (1996 & 1997) as the other Husky who has played in two World Junior tourneys for Team USA. A total of 10 SCSU players have skated for Team USA at the IIHF World Juniors since 1991.
ZERO GAIN: David Hrenak now has 3 shutouts this season and six in his career.  He now ranks fourth in the team records for most career shutouts along with Bobby Goepfert, Jase Weslosky and Brian Leitza.  His three shutouts this year also ranks 4th in the team records
OPPONENT NOTES: The Huskies owned a 3-0-2 record against North Dakota in 2017-18.  Last year, SCSU posted a 4-3 OT win on March 2, 2018 and a 2-2 OT tie on March 3, 2018 at the REA.  In St. Cloud, SCSU skated to a 2-2 tie on Dec. 8, 2017 and a 3-1 win on Dec. 9, 2017.  To cap the season, SCSU gained a 3-2 OT win over UND in the semi's of the Frozen Faceoff at the Xcel Energy Center...in the last six meetings between these two teams, five of the games have gone into overtime...SCSU's Jon Lizotte and Jacob Benson are both residents of Grand Forks, N.D. and both played prep hockey at Red River H.S...Robby Jackson has notched nine assists and 10 points during his career vs. UND...Jacob Benson has scored four goals against UND during his college career...Jordan Kawaguchi lead UND with 17 points (6g/11a) and Rhett Gardner with eight goals...frosh Adam Scheel has a 2.14 GAA and an .899 SV% this season for UND...UND owns a 71-43-14 series lead...SCSU is 3-0-2 in the last five meetings vs. UND...at the REA, SCSU is 1-3-1 in its last five games played vs. UND...North Dakota received votes in the last USCHO.com poll.
