#1 St. Cloud State returns to win column with 5-2 victory over RMU

The #1 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (14-2-2, 6-0-2 NCHC) returned to the win column with a 5-2 victory over Robert Morris University (8-11-1, 7-6-1 AHA) in the consolation game at the 2019 Three Rivers Classic on Satruday, Jan. 5 in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The Huskies and Colonials staged an even battle for the first 40 minutes of play, before SCSU charged to the win with three goals in the final period in the game played on the ice at PPG Paints Arena - home of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Patrick Newell opened the evening with his 11th goal of the year at 8:17 of the first period. Jack Ahcan and Nick Perbix earned assists on the play, which gave SCSU a 1-0 lead. The lead was shortlived, as RMU jumped back with a goal by Nick Prkusic at 8:46.
SCSU's Kevin Fitzgerald added his third goal of the weekend at 17:39 of the second with assists from Nick Poehling and Jimmy Schuldt. This was Fitzgerald's 10th goal of the evening and it was Schuldt's 11th assist and Nick Poehling's sixth assist of 2018-19.
Once more, RMU rallied early in the third period to tie the game at 2-2. Nick Lalonde scored on the power play at 2:18 with RMU assists from Prkusic and Grant Herbert.
SCSU gained the game winning goal at 6:34 of the third period by Robby Jackson with assists from Nolan Walker and Ahcan. Jackson padded SCSU's lead to two with his second goal of the evening at 12:45 of the third period with a solo assist to Walker. This was Jackson's eighth goal of the season and it was his 100th career point at SCSU. In four seasons with the Huskies, Jackson now had 41 goals and 59 assists for a total of 100 points.
The Huskies completed the night at 18:15 with an empty net goal by Nick Poehling, which made the final goal 5-2. Jack Poehling and Fitzgerald both had assists on the play. This was Nick Poehling's first goal of the season.
In the contest, SCSU outshot the Colonials 35-22. Senior goalie Jeff Smith charted 20 saves in the game and moved his season record to 4-1-1. On the power play, SCSU was 0-of-4 and RMU was 1-of-3.
SCSU will return to its NCHC schedule on Jan. 11-12 with a pair of road games at Minnesota Duluth. Fans can watch these games online at NCHC.tv/scsu and you can listen to the games live on The River 96.7 FM with Jim Erickson and Dave Reichel on the call.
