ST. CLOUD, MINN. – There really is no rest for the St. Cloud State University volleyball team. Just three days after the team's 3-0 sweep of Minnesota-Crookston, the Huskies are hitting the road again, this time for South Dakota and Nebraska. Yes, the well-traveled St. Cloud State team is set for two more road conference matches as it takes on Augustana University and Wayne State College in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play.
The Huskies will open the weekend with a 6 p.m. match against Augustana before heading to Nebraska to take on #11 Wayne State. Live stats and video will be available for both matches and score updates can be found on the team's official Twitter page (@SCSUhuskies_vb).
Here are the five things to know before this weekend's NSIC matches:
7 – The Huskies could best be described as road warriors, as they've played seven of their last nine matches away from the comforts of Halenbeck Hall. In fact, after a six-match home streak from September 12-21, St. Cloud State has spent more time traveling on buses than playing on its home court, with trips ranging from Minot, North Dakota to Wayne Nebraska scattered through the weeks.
1933 – The Huskies have had plenty to celebrate this week, as senior libero Clara Krenz (Oakdale, Minn. / North St. Paul) broke the program record for career digs in the team's win over the Golden Eagles on Tuesday. With her 13th dig of the night, Krenz surpassed former standout Brianne Stamer with 1930 digs in her career at St. Cloud State. Of course, with the half the season remaining, Krenz is continuing to add to her record, as she currently has 1933 digs and counting after Tuesday's total.
14 – Krenz wasn't the only one to put together a historic performance Tuesday night. The entire St. Cloud State team did behind the serving line, as the team recorded a season-high 14 aces in the win over Minnesota-Crookston. That number currently ties for seventh all-time in program history in terms of single match aces and it makes the first time the Huskies have recorded more than 10 aces in a match since 2016 when they recorded 12 against Northern Michigan and UW-Parkside.
3 – St. Cloud State will run into a red-hot Wayne State team on Saturday that was recently ranked #11 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll. Since losing to Concordia-St. Paul in five sets on October 5, the Wildcats have won three-consecutive contests against nationally ranked opponents, including back-to-back five set wins over Upper Iowa and Southwest Minnesota State. In Tuesday's win over the Mustangs, Wayne State rallied down two sets to one to take the match in five, earning its seventh NSIC win of the season.
0 – While the Wildcats are on a three-game win streak, the Vikings are on a three game skid, having lost their last three NSIC matches in heartbreaking fashion. In fact, Augstana's last two matches have gone five sets, with neither falling the Vikings way, as they've lost 3-2 to #19 Winona State and (RV) Sioux Falls in the past week alone.
