The #14 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (1-1-2, 0-0-0 NCHC) collected its first victory of the season with a big 2-1 win over #11 Northeastern University (4-1-1, 1-0-0 HE) on Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The SCSU Huskies relied on a two goal flurry in the second period to gain the upper hand in the contest, which saw SCSU outshoot Northeastern 33-18 on the night.
In the first period, Northeastern posted its lone goal of the night with a power play marker by Tyler Madden at 17:11 that included assists from Zach Solow and Ryan Shea. This proved to be the only offense on the night for Northeastern as SCSU netminder David Hrenak played shutout hockey for the remainder of the night with 17 saves to his credit.
SCSU broke the ice in the second period with a goal by Jack Poehling at 4:59 with assists from Sam Hentges and Easton Brodzinksi. This was Poehling's first goal of the season and his 22nd at SCSU. Â
Hentges then added his third goal of the season with the game winner at 8:37 of the second period. He was assisted on the even-strength goal by Chase Brand and Brodzinski. This was Brozinksi's second assist of the season and his 25 career assist. Brand gained his first collegiate point with the assist. A resident of Nevis, Minn. and grad of Park Rapids H.S., Brand played junior hockey at Madison in the USHL.
On the night, SCSU was 0-of-4 on the power play and NU was 1-of-3. Hrenak was solid down the stretch with eight big saves in the third period, while Craig Pantano made 31 saves in the loss for NU.
The Huskies will return to the ice at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Nov. 1-2 for a pair of non-conference matches against Princeton University. Tickets for both of these games are available at scsutickets.com or by calling 1-877-SCSUTIX. SCSU student get in FREE to these games...just show your SCSU ID card at the door and you get in FREE.
