MINOT, N.D. – The St. Cloud State University volleyball team returned to its usual dominance Friday afternoon. After suffering its first loss of the season last weekend, the Huskies responded with a big 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-14) sweep of Minot State University to improve to 12-1 overall with a 4-1 mark in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play.
It was a balanced and well-rounded effort by St. Cloud State Friday evening, as the team won the offensive battle with 42 kills, 39 assists and five aces. Defensively, though, was there the Huskies really shined. Thanks to 59 team digs and eight team blocks, St. Cloud State held Minot State to a .017 hitting percentage, as the Beavers mustered just 25 kills over the course of three sets. Leading the way was none other than senior libero Clara Krenz (Oakdale, Minn. / North St. Paul), who tallied an impressive 21 digs and averaged 7.0 digs per set in the match.
Offensively, not a single Husky recorded over 10 kills in the match, but 10 different players tallied at least one in the match. Halle Hughes (Mankato, Minn. / Mankato West) was the top offensive player for St. Cloud State on Friday, as she led the team with nine kills and committed just two errors on 15 attempts for a .467 hitting percentage. Linsey Rachel (Maple Lake, Minn. / Maple Lake) and Abby Templin (Cold Spring, Minn. / ROCORI) finished the match with six kills apiece while Rachel Houle (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater) added five.
Maddy Torve (Loretto, Minn. / Heritage Christian Academy) tallied 30 of the Huskies 39 assists, and first year setter Brynn Heinonen (Delano, Minn. / Delano) made her collegiate debut, tallying four assists in the victory.
With the win, St. Cloud State's overall record improves to 12-1 and the team is 4-1 in NSIC play. The Huskies will return to action on Saturday, October 5 when they face the University of Mary at 2 p.m. in Bismarck, North Dakota.
