ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University volleyball team has done quite well on the road this season, compiling a record of 5-1 away from the comforts of Halenbeck Hall. This weekend, the Huskies will put that record to the test, as they travel to North Dakota to face Minot State University and the University of Mary in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play.
These will be the third and fourth consecutive road matches for St. Cloud State, and the furthest the team has traveled to face a conference opponent this 2019 season. Live stats and video will be available to fans who cannot make the cross-state journey, and score updates will be made on the team's official Twitter page (@SCSUhuskeis_vb).
Here are the five things to know before this weekend's NSIC matches:
20 – This weekend will be the first time in 20 days the Huskies have not faced a ranked opponent at least once during the weekend. Since September 13, St. Cloud state has faced four nationally ranked teams and two receiving votes, four of which were in NSIC play. More impressive: the team went 5-1 in that time span with wins over #21 Michigan Tech, #14 Wheeling and #25 Upper Iowa.
12 – Despite suffering their first loss of the season, the Huskies moved from #15 to #12 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II Top-25 poll. The move is historic for several reasons, as the #12 ranking is the highest St. Cloud State has received since the 1996 season. It is also the second highest ranking the team has ever received. In both 1985 and 1995, the Huskies finished the season ranked #10 in the final AVCA Poll after trips to the NCAA Tournament and Elite Eight.
13 – St. Cloud State's 13 match win streak came to an end in last Saturday's five-set loss to #7 Concordia-St. Paul. However, this weekend, the Huskies have a chance to start a new streak, as their previous 13-match win streak all started against the Marauders and Beavers. In the final two matches of the regular season in 2018, St. Cloud State swept Minot State and Mary, kick started a match streak that would extend through September of 2019.
59 – Senior libero Clara Krenz (Oakdale, Minn. / North St. Paul) was named the Wolters Kluwer Athlete of the Month after an outstanding September. As the team's libero, Krenz compiled an impressive 265 digs to average 6.16 per set during the month. Additionally, she moved to third all-time in career digs. Thanks to her 200+ digs in September, Krenz now has 1826 to her name, meaning she is 59 away from tying Andreana Pieper for second all-time in the category.
26 – Krenz isn't the only Husky to make history in September, as sophomore outside Linsey Rachel (Maple Lake, Minn. / Maple Lake) moved to sixth all-time in career double-doubles and became the 20th player in program history to record 30+ double-digit kill matches. With her 25 kill-10 dig performance against the Golden Bears on Saturday, Rachel recorded the 26th double-double of her career at St. Cloud State, surpassing Andrea Thul for sixth all-time. The sophomore additionally recorded her 31st double-digit kill match against Concordia-St. Paul and the fourth match of her career with 20+ kills.
