MOORHEAD, MINN. – St. Cloud State University will be playing in the MSU-Moorhead basketball tournament over the weekend. The Huskies will play two non-conference games against Michigan Tech who has received votes and Metropolitan State University of Denver. Friday., November 15, the Huskies will hit the court and take on Michigan Tech University at 8:00 p.m. Saturday., November 16, SCSU will face off with Metropolitan State University of Denver at 6:00 p.m.
The Huskies won their home opener pretty handedly in Halenbeck Hall last Saturday but will be put to the test this weekend as they face two very solid opposing teams. After posting a 21-9 mark last season, Michigan Tech has started off the season 1-1. Michigan Tech received votes during the pre-season but since then have not been mentioned for being nationally ranked. MTU comes in averaging 72.0 points per game and shooting 40 percent from the field as a team.
Last season, the Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners finished up with a 16-13 (15-7 RMAC) record. The Roadrunners have had a slow start to the season losing their first two games to very strong opponents. Metropolitan State enters the tournament averaging 55.5 points per contest, shooting 84 percent from the charity stripe as a team.
Live stats and video will be available during the game, and fans can also listen to play-by-play on Granite City Sports. Be sure to follow the team's official Twitter page (@SCSUHUSKIES_WBB) for up to date highlights and score alerts.
HERE ARE FIVE THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE TIP-OFF:
81 – The Huskies dropped 81 points in their 2019-20 season debut. There is no secret that the Lady Huskies can score the ball at will. Even though St. Cloud State only shot 24 percent from beyond the arch, the team was still able to shoot 59.38 percent in the second half.
21 – It is always better to give then receive, the Huskies had 21 assists as a team in their first game of the season. Kelsey Peschel led the way with four assists. Great ball movement allows St. Cloud State to generate more open shots. This offense is poised for a breakout season with the way they move the ball.
DEFENSE – In the season debut the defense was firing on all cylinders. The St. Cloud State defense forced 23 turnovers on the night. The Huskies tallied 16 steals, three blocks, and held Valley City State to 37 percent shooting.
22 – The Huskies were able to jump out to such a big lead by scoring 22 points off of all the forced turnovers. Taking advantage of opponent miscues will be the key to winning games in the tough NSIC conference.
(RV) – Michigan Tech received votes to be nationally ranked at the beginning of the season. Last season, MTU finished 21-9 (16-4 GLIAC). MTU came up just short by losing in the semifinals of the GLIAC tournament to end their season.
