St. Cloud State Steamrolls Valley City State in Home Opener

ST. CLOUD, MINN. – Steady balance of strong defense and high percentage shooting lifts St. Cloud State University over the Valley City State Vikings 81-57. The Huskies start the season off at 1-0 (0-0 NSIC) while the Vikings remain 2-2 (0-0 North Star) due to this being an exhibition game for them.
The Huskies shot 31-of-68 from the field for 45.6 percent as a team. SCSU shot just 6-of-25 from beyond the arch for 24 percent, and 13-of-19 for 68.4 percent from the charity stripe. The Huskies also had 21 assists as well as 21 steals on the night. St. Cloud State also outrebounded the Vikings 36-33.
Valley City shot 20-of-53 for 37.7 percent from the field as a team. The Vikings also shot 5-of-13 for 38.5 percent from the three-point line. At the free-throw line the Vikings shot 12-of-19 for 63.2 percent. The Valley City bench outscored the Huskies bench 30-19 on the night.
Tori Wortz (Jr., G, Hutchinson, Minn.) led the way for SCSU with 15 points, two rebounds, three assists, and zero turnovers from the guard position. Wortz also drained three of her four free-throw attempts. Niki Kilboten (Jr., F, Eua Claire, Wis.) was right behind her with 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Kilboten also five rebounds, three assists, one block, and six steals. Katrina Theis (So., F, Maple Grove, Minn.) scored 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field and 5-of-8 shooting at the charity stripe. Theis also tallied six rebounds and one assist. Madelin Dammann (Sr., G, Waconia, Minn.) contributed 12 points, four rebounds, one assist, and three steals.
Valley City was led offensively by bench players Macy Kvilvang and Adriana Tores who both had 10 points. Kvilvang added five rebounds, one assist, and one block. Tores tallied three rebounds and two assists on the night.
The Huskies started the game off with a three-pointer from Brenah Evans (So., G, De Pere, Wis.). St. Cloud State maintained their lead up until late in the second quarter when the Vikings took a 31-29 lead and the two teams went back and forth until half time. In the first quarter the largest lead was 10 points, SCSU went on a 10-2 run behind six points from Wortz.
Entering the second quarter, Valley City went on a 7-0 run to bring the Vikings within three points. Going into half time the Huskies barely led the Vikings 35-34. SCSU came out of half time firing on all cylinders by shooting 59.3 percent and jumping out to a 15-point lead.
The Huskies continued to pull away in the fourth quarter by extending the lead to 26. Steals were a huge part of why SCSU jumped out to such a huge lead. The Vikings were only able to score 11 points in the fourth quarter due to the intense pressure of the St. Cloud State defense.
St. Cloud State will be back in action at the MSU Moorhead tournament where they will face off with Michigan Tech University November 15, 2019 and Metropolitan State University of Denver November 16, 2019. The times of the game are still to be determined.
