SIOUX FALLS, S. D. – The St. Cloud State University men's basketball team has been on a hot streak these last two weeks. The Huskies earned several clutch Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) wins and were looking for another against the University of Sioux Falls Saturday evening. Unfortunately, a win was not in the cards for St. Cloud State, as the team fell to Sioux Falls 73-67.
Trevon Marshall (Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) once again led the Huskies in scoring in the defeat, as he tallied 21 points on 7-16 shooting from the floor and a 7-8 mark from the charity stripe. Ilya Tyrtyshnik (Kyiv, Ukraine / Kyiv Specialized School #49), Anthony Roberts (Chicago, Ill. / Oak Park) and Andrija Blatancic (Bergen, Norway / Academy of Arts) each tallied 11 points for St. Cloud State while Diamond Onwuka (Barcelona, Spain / Canarias Basketball Academy) led the team with nine rebounds.
The Huskies battled the Cougars in the opening half and trailed by just six points after the opening 20 minutes of play. In fact, St. Cloud State put together a furious second half rally as Sioux Falls led by as many as 16 points with 4:38 remaining in the first half. Thanks to an impressive scoring barrage by seniors Marshall and Onwuka, the Huskies were able to cut the deficit in half and entered the locker room trailing 37-31.
Unfortunately, St. Cloud State was never able to make up those six points, as the Cougars took the game by a final score of 73-67. Still, the Huskies had several chances to take a lead of their own, cutting the Sioux Falls leads to 63-60 with 5:26 remaining in the half. With under two minutes remaining, St. Cloud State managed to pull within two at 67-65, but the team couldn't quite take a late lead, as the Cougars went on to take the game by a final score of 73-67.
With the loss, the Huskies overall record falls to 6-5 and they are now 3-2 in NSIC play. St. Cloud State will look to end the first half of the season on a high note, as it hosts the University of Minnesota-Duluth at 6 p.m. on Saturday, December 21.
