
St. Cloud State Falls 64-59 to Minnesota-Duluth at Home

ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University women's basketball team dropped a close game to the University of Minnesota Duluth at home. With UMD winning 64-59 they earned a regular season sweep of the Huskies to remain perfect in the NSIC.
St. Cloud State falls to 6-4 (3-3 NSIC) on the season after today's loss. Minnesota-Duluth improves to 9-3 (6-0 NSIC) to remain unbeaten in the NSIC.
The Huskies shot 24-of-62 for 38.7 percent from the field. From three, SCSU shot 7-of-21 for 33.3 percent as a team. St. Cloud State shot 4-of-7 for 57.1 percent from the charity stripe.
The leading scorer of the game was Katrina Theis (So., F, Maple Grove, Minn.) with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Theis was also 2-of-2 from deep and added four rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Tori Wortz (Jr., G, Hutchinson, Minn.) also added 14 points on 6-of-15 shooting. Wortz had a team high in in steals with five. Wortz also tallied four assists and three rebounds.
Minnesota-Duluth shot 23-of-47 for 48.9 percent from the field as a team. The Bulldogs only took nine shots from deep but went 3-of-9 for 33.3 percent. One major difference in the game was free throw shooting, UMD shot 15-of-19 for 78.9 percent.
Brooke Olson scored 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting while adding five rebounds. Ann Simonet tallied 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Simonet also had six rebounds and two assists on the day as well. Sarah Grow contributed 11 points, nine rebounds, two blocks, and one assists.
Wortz scored the first five points of the first quarter for the Huskies. After a missed three-point attempt, Brenah Evans (So., G, De Pere, Wis.) grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back up to extend the Huskies lead to 7-2. Duluth settled in and went on a run of their own to make the score 14-13 Huskies. Two free throws from Theis, St. Cloud State took a 16-13 lead into the second quarter.
UMD started off the second quarter by going on a 6-0 run and taking a 19-16 lead. Erin Navratil scored her first points of the season on a tre ball to tie the game at 19. The Bulldogs quickly took a 23-19 lead with 4:45 left in the second quarter. Four points from Nikki Kilboten (Jr., F, Eau Claire, Wis.) tied the game at 25 before the Bulldogs took a 27-25 lead. After a back and forth second quarter the Huskies and Bulldogs were all tied at 29.
Minnesota-Duluth took an early 36-31 lead until a Caitlyn Peterson (Jr., G, Lakeville, Minn.) three-pointer and an Evans layup tied it all at 36. A Wortz layup made the score 40-38 UMD. With time winding down, the Bulldogs scored on a last second layup to extend their lead to 42-38.
With 5:34 left in the game, UMD led SCSU 48-41. After Minnesota-Duluth got out to a big lead, the Huskies cut into the lead on a three-pointer from Madelin Dammann (Sr., G, Waconia, Minn.) to make the score 54-49 UMD. A three from Theis made the score 58-54 UMD with 32 seconds left. The Huskies late push was not enough to down Minnesota Duluth. The Bulldogs won 64-59.
The Huskies will be back in action in 13 days as they take a brief break. St. Cloud State will take on Minnesota-Crookston Saturday, Jan., 3 2020 in Halenbeck Hall at 5:30 p.m.
