
St. Cloud State men's hockey to play games at Mariucci Classic on Dec. 28-29

TOURNAMENT IN THE CITIES: The St. Cloud State men's hockey team (5-7-4, 3-5-0 NCHC) will continue its 2019-20 season with games at the Mariucci Classic at the 3M Arena at Mariucci in Minneapolis, Minn. SCSU will open tournament play with a game at 4:00 p.m. against Minnesota State (15-2-1, 10-2-0 WCHA) on Saturday, Dec. 28. In the other first round game at the tournament, Bemidji State (8-5-3, 8-3-1 WCHA) will play host Minnesota (5-9-4, 2-4-4 B10) at 7:00 p.m. on Dec. 28. The tournament will conclude on Dec. 29 with Bemidji State playing either SCSU or Minnesota State at 4 p.m. and Minnesota playing either SCSU or Minnesota at 7 p.m. All games will be played at 3M Arena at Mariucci. Games that include Minnesota will be televised on Fox Sports North Plus. Tickets are available at www.gophersports.com

PRE-GAME FUN IN MINNEAPOLIS: The SCSU Alumni Association will be hosting pre-game parties at the 2019 Mariucci Classic on Dec. 28-29 in Minneapolis. SCSU fans will be gathering at Stub & Herb's at 2 p.m. on each day of the tourney. Stub & Herb's is located at 227 SE Oak Street in Minneapolis. SCSU opens the tournament on Dec. 28 with a 4 p.m. game vs. Minnesota State, Mankato. The games on Dec. 29 will be at 4 p.m. or 7 p.m. Host Minnesota and Bemidji State will play in the other first round game at the Mariucci Classic, which will be played at the 3M Arena at Mariucci in Minneapolis.

TOURNAMENT TIDBITS: SCSU, Bemidji State, Minnesota State and Minnesota are all former members of the WCHA...the last time SCSU and Minnesota State played each other was a 5-2 loss by the Huskies vs. MSU on Jan. 20, 2018 in the Hockey Day Minnesota game at the HBNHC. Earlier this season, SCSU skated to a pair of tie games at Bemidji State on Oct. 11-12. The last meeting for the Huskies against Minnesota was a series split on Jan. 6, 2018 (5-2 win for the Huskies in St. Cloud) and a 2-0 loss for SCSU at Mariucci on Jan. 7, 2018.
NCHC CHAMPS: The Huskies claimed the 2018-19 NCHC championship with a 5-0 win at Omaha on Feb. 23. This marks the third time the Huskies have won the Penrose Cup, which is the most of any team in the NCHC. SCSU also won the NCHC regular season title in 2014, 2018 and 2019.

SERIES SPLIT: In their last outing, the Huskies posted a weekend split against NCHC rival Omaha. On Dec. 13, the Huskies posted a 4-1 victory over the Mavericks at the HBNHC. SCSU goals were notched by Jack Ahcan (PPG), Micah Miller (GWG), Nick Poehling and Easton Brodzinski. David Hrenak made 25 saves on the way to his 5th victory of the season in goal. Of note, SCSU was 5-of-5 on the PK in the game...SCSU capped the weekend with a 4-3 OT loss to Omaha on Dec. 14. SCSU trailed 2-0 early in the game before a goal by Jami Krannila on the PP broke the shutout. Omaha pushed its lead to 3-1 in the first before SCSU rallied with a second period goal by Nick Perbix and a third period marker by Kevin Fitzgerald. Omaha ruined the night with a goal at :11 of the OT session to capture the win. In the game, SCSU goalie Jaxon Castor made his collegiate debut in relief of starter David Hrenak. Castor suffered the loss but he showed well with 16 saves to his credit.
PENALTY KILL PROWESS: The Huskies continue to dominate on the penalty kill as they have not allowed a power play goal since Nov. 23 at UND. Since that game, SCSU is 17-of-17 on the penalty kill and that includes two games at Miami and the two games vs. Omaha. On Dec. 13, SCSU was 5-of-5 on the penalty kill. The Huskies only had one penalty called against them on Dec. 14, which marked the third time this season that SCSU has only had one penalty in a game called against them. Â
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jack Ahcan was named the NCHC Defensive Player of the Week on Dec. 16. Ahcan finished the Omaha series with a goal, an assist, eight blocked shots, six shots on goal and an even plus/minus, while leading SCSU's penalty kill to go 6-for-6 against the Mavericks. This marked the second consecutive week that Ahcan has gained NCHC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Ahcan now has 93 career points (18g/75a) and is fourth on the Huskies' career points by a defenseman list. SCSU's all-time leader on defense is Jimmy Schuldt, who had 118 points from 2015-19. Ahcan also ranks 17th in the team records with 75 career assists and 37th with 93 points.
WORKING OVERTIME: The Huskies played in their seventh overtime game of the season on Dec. 14. This marked the second consecutive OT game that the Huskies have lost. SCSU is now 1-2-4 this season in overtime games played, which included two tie games vs. Bemidji State and a tie game against Princeton and a tie game against Northern Michigan.
POEHLING POWER: Nick Poehling now has five goals this season and has posted two goals and four assists in his last three games for SCSU. Of note, Nick Poehling scored his 50th career point on Dec. 13 vs. Omaha...on the topic of milestones, Nolan Walker added his 30th career point on Dec. 13 with his helper vs. Omaha. He also had an assist in the 4-3 OT loss to Omaha on Dec. 14....Jack Poehling's next point will be his 50th career point at SCSU. Jack Poehling now has 24g/25a in his career.
STREAK ENDED: The Huskies saw their 10-game win streak vs. Omaha end on Dec. 14 with the 4-3 OT loss. The last time that the Huskies had lost a game against Omaha was on Dec. 10, 2016 with a 3-1 setback at the HBNHC...the loss to Omaha on Dec. 14 also broke a three-game winning streak for the Huskies, which included a pair of wins at Miami and a win over Omaha on Dec. 13.
SCSU NOTES: The Huskies own a 2-3-1 record against top 20 teams (at the time they play) during the 2019-20 season...Jack Ahcan has played in 112 consecutive games...SCSU is 3-0-0 this seaosn when Jack Poehling scores a goal...SCSU is 4-1-0 in the last five games played against Minnesota, 2-3-0 vs. Minnesota State and 3-0-2 in the last five games vs. BSU.
OPPONENT NOTES: . The face behind the MSU bench this season may look a bit familiar to Husky fans, as Mike Hastings begins his 8th year as head coach for the Mavericks. Hastings played for the Huskies from 1986-88 and scored 6g/26a during his college career at defense. He later served as an assistant coach under Craig Dahl from 1988-92 and 1993-94...MSU brings a 15-2-1 record into the game. The Mavericks most recently gained 5-2 win and a 4-1 loss at NMU on Dec. 13-14...in the last meeting between these two former WCHA rivals, SCSU posted a 5-2 loss on Jan. 20, 2018 at the HBNHC. This was a Hockey Day Minnesota game...at the DI level, SCSU owns a 30-18-7 record against the Mavericks. SCSU is 7-3-0 in the last 10 outings against MSU, Mankato. The all-time series started back in 1969-70, with the Mavericks owning a 45-29-6 series lead prior to the dawn of the Division I era at SCSU in 1987-88...turn back the clock to the 1969-70 season for the first meeting between these two schools on the ice...senior Marc Michaelis leads MSU with 10g/12a this season, while Dryden McKay leads MSU in goal with a 1.09 GAA and a .955 save rate.
