St. Cloud State falls in title game at Mariucci Classic, 4-1

The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (6-8-4, 3-5-0 NCHC) lost a 4-1 decision to the University of Minnesota (7-9-4, 2-4-4 B10) in the championship game of the Mariucci Classic on Sunday, Dec. 29 in Minneapolis.
Both teams skated to a 0-0 tie in the first period of play before Minnesota broke the shutout at 3:46 of the second period with a power play goal by Sammy Walker. Minnesota then notched the game winner at 4:30 of the second period with a goal by Tyler Nanne.
At 5:26 of the second period, Bryce Brodzinski posted Minnesota's third goal of the game to make the tally 3-0.
In the third period, Minnesota iced the game with an empty net goal at 17:41 by Scott Reedy. The Huskies broke the shutout in the closing minutes of play with a marker by Micah Miller at 18:22 with a solo assist from Jake Wahlin. This was Miller's second of the Mariucci Classic and his third goal of the season.
In the game, UM outshot the Huskies 33-25. SCSU was 0-4 on the power play and UM was 1-3. Jaxon Castor made the start for SCSU and had 11 saves in the game before being relieved in the second period by David Hrenak, who allowed one goal and had 18 saves to finish the game.
SCSU players named to the Mariucci Classic All-Tournament team were Zach Okabe, Jami Krannila and Nick Perbix.
The Huskies will enjoy a bye week before returning to NCHC action on Jan. 10-11 with a pair of games at Denver.
