St. Cloud State men's hockey earns weekend sweep at Miami

St. Cloud State University men's hockey maintained its recent success against Miami University with a convincing 5-3 victory over the RedHawks on Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Steve Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio. The victory moved SCSU's unbeaten streak against Miami to nine games and it marked SCSU's first series sweep of 2019-20.
SCSUÂ is now 4-6-4, 2-4-0 NCHC, while Miami falls to 4-10-3, 2-5-1 NCHC.

In the first period, SCSU opened the game's offense with a goal by Nick Poehling at 11:52 with assists from Jack Ahcan and Kevin Fitzgerald. The RedHawks replied quick with a goal of their own at 11:52 of the first period by Chase Pietzke to make it 1-1.
In the second period, Spencer Meier broke the game open with a power play goal at 13:11 with assists from Ahcan and Nick Poehling. The Huskies then took a 2-1 lead into the final period, which was opened with a goal by Jack Poehling at 3:17 of the third with a solo assist to Nick Poehling. On the night, Nick Poehling had one goal, two assists, five shots, four blocks and was +3...and he was also named the game's number one star.
The Huskies pushed their lead to 4-1 with a goal by Fitzgerald at 10:02 of the third. The solo assist on the play was charted by Chase Brand. This was Fitzgerald's second goal of the season and Brand's fourth assist of 2019-20, and the goal also proved to be the eventual game winner for SCSU.
Miami refused to go quietly as a goal by Christian Mohs at 14:05 of the third closed the gap to 4-2. SCSU's Sam Hentges quelled the rally at 15:25 with his team leading seventh goal of the year. Ondrej Trejbal and Micah Miller each had assists on the play, which was Trejbal's first collegiate point. Of note, Hentges has now scored at least a point in 13 games for the Huskies this season and leads the club with seven goals and 13 assists for 20 points in 2019-20.
Miami finished the game with a goal at 17:24 by Casey Gilling to make the final 5-3. In the game, SCSU outshot the RedHawks 35-30 and the Huskies were 1-4 on the power play and 1-1 on the penalty kill. Over the weekend, SCSU was 4-4 on the penalty kill and the Huskies only had one penalty in the game on Dec. 7.
In the nets, David Hrenak made 27 saves to gain his fourth win of the season for SCSU. He now has 41 wins during his career with the Huskies.
